Vegetarian Chinese. Mostly Vegan. Serves eggs during breakfast.
Menu: Delicious appetizers including scallion pancakes, Zen Veggie-burger
(sunflower seeds, kale, brown rice), Vegetable Dumplings, Stir-fried
Brown Rice with minced vegetables and Spinach Wonton Soup. Sweet and
Sour Delight is puffed pecans, soy protein and pineapple in a sweet
& sour sauce. Tofu-chestnut Mini Loaves, Kale & Seaweed Salad,
Vegetarian Squid, Spinach Wonton Soup, Sautéed Artichoke, Eggplant
in Garlic Sauce and Stuffed Chinese Cabbage. Good hot and sour vegetable
soup. Batter-fried Potatoes on top of steamed broccoli. The Sesame Medallions
in Barbecue Sauce made of wheat gluten tastes like beef. Most main preparations
come with brown rice, moo shu roll or spring roll. Special teas and
fresh juices. Some good dairy and vegan desserts. Fresh juices.
Comments: Features gourmet dishes. Conservative. Good food and
good quick service. A bit impersonal. Delicious food, relaxed atmosphere.
Lots of variety. Good selection of dishes. Clean bathrooms. Friendly
staff. There are three Zen Palate restaurants in Manhattan. The one
at 663 Ninth Avenue is a small informal place with about 20 seats. The
one in Union Square is the original one. It is like two restaurants
in one. The one upstairs is formal and upscale with tuxedoed waiters
and is expensive. It has a view of Union square. The downstairs one
is informal where you sit on cushions cross-legged and the prices are
cheaper. Upstairs in the Union Square branch is conservative and downstairs
is cheaper and friendlier.
Vegan Warning: I read on the Internet some things written by
a Zen employee about egg in various products, so you may want to ask
about these dishes. The Yam Fries, Orange Sensation (eggs in the batter),
Zen Rolls (eggs in the veggie ham), Spinach Linguini Salad (eggs in
the noodles), Jewel of Happiness (eggs in tempura batter), Sheppard's
Pie Croquets, and the Veggie Ham contain eggs. The soy dairy in the
Zen Ravioli contains casein. The Veggie Burger with Yam Fries contains
eggs, but the Zen Veggie Burger is completely vegan.
Other Info: Full service and take-out counter (has items found
in the dining room plus others, such as veggie-burgers). Delivers. Non-smoking.
Accepts AMEX, MC, VISA (minimum $15). Price: $$-$$$.
Directions: L, N, R, 4, 5, 6 trains stop near the Union Square
branch. To the 2127 Broadway place take 1, 9 trains to 79 Street.

Assorted Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian). Vegetarian-friendly.
Vegan options. Not pure vegetarian.

Black Bean Soup, brown rice, spring rolls, burritos, Sautéed
Artichokes, vegetarian cold cuts, pastas, soups, noodles dishes, and
Rice & Broccoli in garlic sauce. Organic Salad with Miso-mustard
Dressing, Steamed Eggplant with Spicy Black Bean Sauce, Marinated Seaweed,
Soybean Gluten with vegetables in a curry sauce and Mushroom Steak.
Fresh juices, teas, cappuccino, espresso.
Comments: High class place. The food is first-class.
Caters to business people during lunch. Good quick service for lunch.
The service can be slow for dinner. Spring rolls can be very small and
I did not think they were so good. Reasonably priced lunch specials
for NYC. Servings for lunch specials can be small, but will be enough
for some people. Service during lunch can be very quick (it took me
less than five minutes to get my food). Got a high recommendation in
the Zagat Survey in 1998. I had set meal of veg chicken and beef sauté
with brown rice and some very small spring roils for $7.95. It was really
good, but if you are really hungry it will not be enough. Recommended.
Warning: This place used to be fully vegan, but recently
they started serving real meat products and fish. So you definitely
should ask about this, as they may not tell you.
Other Info: Full service, take-out, delivery, catering.
