Calcutta
Hare Krishna Bakery (247-3757), 6 Russel Street, two blocks west of the US consulate, is a small place that serves excellent baked goods, including pizza, cakes, and mango milkshakes. The Calcutta ISKCON Temple runs it, so everything is prasada (spiritual). Open 10.30 am to 8.30 pm.
Kamala Vilas, near the Metro Cinema, off Chowringhee Rd, has good, cheap South Indian food.
Junior Brothers, above Gupta Confectionery at 18B Park St, is a good cheap Indian place. It serves large thalis, which are a good value.
Vineet (440-788), 1 Shakespeare Sarani, across from the ITDC tourist office, in the basement of the Air-Conditioned Market, is an expensive, first-class place.
Anand Restaurant, 19 Chittaranjan Ave, is one of the best restaurants in town. It is a higher-class South Indian place and is popular. In the evening you may have to wait a half-hour for seating.
Jyoti Vihar, a few buildings down from the US Embassy on Ho Chi Minh Sarani, is a South Indian snack place.
Friends Home, on a side road next to New Market, is a snack and juice place that is popular with the locals. It serves good dosas.
Vicky's, Lindsay St, has good South Indian food and is a good value.
Ideal Vegetarian Refreshment, 26/4 Hindustan Park Rd, serves South Indian food and is open from 11 am to 9 pm.
Haldiram Bhujiawala, AJC Bose Rd, next to the Aeroflot Office, near the corner of Chowringhee Lane, is a popular snack and sweet shop.
Ganguram, 46 JL Nehru Rd, near the Victoria Memorial, is a famous sweet shop. They also have a branch at 159 Vivekananda Rd.

Darjeeling (Darjiling)
Great Punjab Restaurant, Robertson Rd, has good veg Punjabi food.
Stardust, Chowrasta, is a good popular, vegetarian place.
Jain Bhojanalaya, NC Goenka Rd, has good vegetarian food.

Mayapur
The ISKCON Hare Krishna temple has Guest House prasada is served in the Gada Building at 1 pm and 8.30 pm. The lunch cost Rs 25 and consists of rice, dhal, two sabjis (vegetables), chapatis or puris, pakoras and a sweet. Dinner is Rs 20. Recommended. Pay for this meal at the inquiry room (room 111) in the long building, where you check in. There is a restaurant halfway between the main gate and the temple. It serves pizza, sandwiches, dosas, sweets, and other such things. It is not good and most items are served cold unless you ask to have them heated. Open from 7 am to 2 pm, 5 to 8 pm. You can purchase nice cakes and sweets from the maha-prasada booth by the front door of the temple. You can also reserve large maha-plates of the Deities for about Rs 200 by asking at the maha-prasada booth.

Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri
Cindrella, Sevoke Rd, has a veg restaurant.

We believe this book to be by far the best practical guide about India, and is definitely worth purchasing. The words meat, fish or eggs are not mentioned in this book accept to warn against them.
