Choosing a Web Host

Choosing a good web host can really make a big different. I believe it is best to choice a large, long existing company. Sometimes your web host can make it difficult for you to change to another web host, so I believe if you deal with a large company you account means nothing to them.

When you choose a web server host there are several things that you want to consider.

1. Web Server Space - how big you web site will be.
2. Data Transfer Allowance (bandwidth) - which is how much data can be transferred by your site. This number will change according to the amount of file transfer and how big they are.
3. Proper documentation.
4. Good technical supports.
5. Extras such as PHP support.
6. Extras such as free yearly domain name cost or very cheap domain cost.

You usually will want to get more space than you will initially need as almost for certain the space you need will increase increase. You may even consider to getting even 10 times or more extra space than you need at the present time for the future. This is especially true if you plan to have a lot of graphic images and pictures.

My Web Hosting Site Story
I made a few major mistakes when I host my two first web sites. For my first site I was recommended by the person who was doing my site to use a friend of his to host my site, which I did. From that I received nothing but trouble. When I wanted to ask question most of the time I got no response, but sometimes I got a response after weeks, but none of the responses were to my satisfaction and nothing was ever resolves. I did not know how to access my web statistic and never got a straight answer how to do this. Basically I was dissatisfied from beginning to end. The final straw was the web host went out of business and my site went off the Internet but the person never contacted me about it.

My next web site was with another person I knew and he did a pretty good job, but I also had several problems. The first problem I had was one day when I tried to upload some files to the web host and the files just would not go. I tried it for days and then decided to experiment and took a few web pages off the site and put a small one on. At this time I suspected that there was a limit to how much space I had from this host. When I contacted him I was told that I had used up all my space, but I had never been told there was a limit to the space I could use. Now I am using Yahoo! as my web host and I am using three times as much web page space and that is not even 1% of the space that Yahoo! is offering with their basic package.

The other main problem I had was I put a script for receiving emails and some questionnaire information on my site that I paid a programmer to do. The programmer put these file on the site and they worked good for about six months. Then they stopped working, which I realized about one month later. I contacted my web designer and they told that most likely the web host had changed something on his server. I asked the web host about this and he told me he had changed something that would have caused the problem. But after months I never was able to solve the problem.

Also I had basically the same communication problem as at first the web host was living in America and was easy to get in contact with and was very helpful (unlike the first host). But he later left the country and sometimes it would take be day to get in contact with him.

The moral of the story is choice your web host carefully. I have been using Yahoo! web hosting service for the last year and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I feel the rates that they charge are very reasonable for what they charge. They have 24 hours help support seven days a week, which the several times I called them they quickly helped me solve my problems. They have a good selection of PHP options that you can add to your site: such as:

Email gathering tool where guest can enter their email address
Guestbook
PayPal Connection
Map facilities
Personal Site Search
Yahoo Search Box
Surveys

When I saw the PHP facilities that Yahoo offered that was more than enough reason for me to use them. As it is expensive to get a programmer to do this work and if something goes wrong you have to deal with both your host and programmer to fix it. With Yahoo hardly anything ever goes wrong and if it does that are right there at any time of day to solve your problem.

Type of Sites

One Product Site
A one-product website usually has just two or three pages and just tries to sell one product. Often has a place for users to enter their email address so you can sell them their products in the future. Often this site is a long sales letter, a contact page and an order page

Small Company Brochure Site
Often 10 to 20 pages which describe a company, what is does and the products they sell. Location, contact page and About Us page. It is like an online brochure for the company. A one product website may not be so big, but if it has a lot of affiliate and it ranks high on the search engines it may receive plenty of hits.

A company brochure type site can usually do well with a basic web package from a reputable host.

A one product site with three pages may use just 150 Kilobytes of web space. Compare this to the fact that basic web site hosting packages offer 25 Megabytes of space or over 100 times that space.

But if it receives 100,000 page views per month it will use about 5
Gigabytes a month of data transfer.

Large Company Page
These sites can be huge and can take up a lot of space and bandwidth needs.

Theme-Based Site:
These sites are based on a specific subject and everything on that site relates to that subject. There may be articles, information, discussion boards and resources and tutorials. These sites may also sell affiliate product that relate to the subjects presented on that site or sell their own products that relate to the subject on that site.

A theme based site at first will not need a very big space or bandwidth at first. But I know when I first started my web site, that at first I had more than enough room, but I quickly outgrew the space and needed more. A program like Yahoo offers a basic space that didn’t use up even 1% of what they were offering. I use about 15% of the bandwidth they are offering. I also figure that as I explain that so will they so most likely I will never reach the limit that they offer without having to pay extra. But of course I sure wish I do.

It pays to plan for the future and look at how much it cost for extra space. But you can be certain that the space and bandwidth space

You must plan for the future from day one, and get more web space and data transfer than you seem to need at the beginning.

Picture on Site (Size versus Data Transfer Space)
You will really need much more space if you have plenty of pictures or offer an Ebook with a 1 Megabyte PDF in size. If a thousand people a month download the book you will need 1 Gigabyte of data transfer space just for that download. You are more likely to over consume your bandwidth instead of the space allowed so you should pay attention to this. As extra fees will be charged usually if you exceed your bandwidth space.

you can easily keep control of your web space size, but the data transfer is harder to control. For instance if your site suddenly gets place good on the search engine you can see a giant jump in your web site use which will cause you to use much more data transfer space than you first though.

Some webmaster may use your bandwidth by linking directly to images from your web site and not from their web server.

You should definitely check to see if there is an upgrade hosting package that you can upgrade to if your web hits increase.
For instance Yahoo!.

Content Web Sites are ones that provide contents, such as articles, tutorials, free ebooks and resources. This type of site attracts their target audience with incentives. Their products and services are mentioned on the main page with a link to further information.

Content sites usually profit by educating their visitors.

Web Hosts
A Web Host is a company that provides you with server space
for your web site. This includes all of your web pages, graphics, scripts and files.

When your web address is typed into a browser, your web host
is being contacted to locate and display the requested page.

Free versus Professional Web Hosts
A business site should never be hosted by a free hosting service.

A free hosted service does not establish credibility. Also many Search Engines do not index a site hosted by a free hosting company.

Yahoo! Web Hosting
I am using Yahoo! to both host my website and store. You can use the description below of their service to have an idea of what you should beat with other web host.

I have been basically totally satisfied with their service and have considered it to be very reasonably priced for what they offer. Their PHP tools to make your website interactive are worth to me the price.

For the most part I am very satisfied with their web support especially since it is 24 hours 7 days a week. Sometimes their support people are not that good, but you can always call another support person and get the answers you need.

One weakness they have which is quite bizarre by my standards, which is their help documentation is not that great, but you give statement on their site on how great it is. I have several times tried to use their documentation and help to solve things and just could find the answer to my problem. I would then call their customer support for the answer which they would usually do fairly quickly and a few times I asked them where that answer could be found on their site and the support person had no idea. But they do have good documentation compared to most host sites.

My recommendation it to use Yahoo!! or at least use them as a standard to beat. If your want to read about their shopping card see Shopping Cart Article.
