File Transfer Protocol, better known as FTP, is a procedure that allows you to upload and download files from your server. It also enables you to delete files off the server, create directories (folders) and delete directories.

Many HTML editors allow you to upload files to your web server, A FTP program usually gives you much more control and is usually easier and quicker to use. An FTP programs must be installed on your computer.

One of the most widely used FTP program is WS FTP Pro http://www.wsftp.com. It is an easy to use program and does a great job. I have found this program to work much better then any FTP program that was offered by web hosts. Also several of the professional web pages designers have recommended this program.

One point to note is page name with blank spaces in them cannot be uploaded to a server.
