The Deities in this temple are life-size Sri Sri Radha
Krishna-chandra, along with Lalita Devi. This temple was built around
1810, by Sri Krishna Chandra Sinha at the cost of 25 lakhs (2.5 million)
rupees. Lalla Babu is the nickname of Sri Krishna Candra. He was a
wealthy landlord in Murshidabad, Bengal. Even though Lalla Babu was
so rich, he gave up everything and collected alms house to house.
Lalla Babu also arranged to have the ghatas around Radha Kunda constructed.
There is a story that Srila Prabhupada tells in Nectar
of Devotion about Lalla Babu. “About two hundred years ago or
less, one big landlord known as Lalla Babu, a Calcutta landholder,
became a Vaishnava and lived in Vrindavana. He was also begging from
door to door, even at the homes of his political enemies. Begging
involves being ready to be insulted by persons to whose home one has
to come. But one has to tolerate such insults for the sake of Krishna”
One time he was in a lawsuit with a builder of another neighboring
temple. After he won the case he later went to the house of this person
to beg under the orders of his guru. Srila Prabhupada uses this story
as an example of pridelessness.
The workmanship of this temple is excellent. It is in
a large courtyard. It has a big flower garden and no outside flowers
are used for worship of this Deity. This temple is built like the
Jagannatha temple in Puri. Architecturally it is an interesting temple.
How To Get Here The Ranganath temple
is right next to this temple, but you have to get on the road that
goes to Brahma Kunda to get to it. From Brahma Kunda you follow the
road around towards the Yamuna. This temple is about two minutes from
Brahma Kunda. If you are coming south from Gopinath Bazaar, you make
a left on the road just after Bilvamangala Thakur’s samadhi.
This temple is then about a five-minute walk, down the road on the
right. It is a large temple and is hard to miss.
Temple Timings Darshan is from 8 am
to 12 noon and 4 to 8 pm.
