Doctors, Hospital & Medical in Vrindavana

Doctors in Vrindavan
There is a good Ayurvedic doctor on the road going to Banke Bihari Temple from Loi Bazaar, called Dr Narottama Lal Gupta. His son Liladhar Gupta, speaks English well and is also good. They also practice at their house at 502 Purana Bazaar (442-665; fax 443-914). (9 am to 12 noon and 5 to 8 pm). I have personally gone to them and they have been helpful.

A fairly reliable western doctor is Doctor Nangia (442-418, 442-531), who is located near the Loi Bazaar post office, across from Mahesh cloth shop. He is open from 9.30 am to 1 pm and 5 to 8 pm, except Wednesday. He makes house calls for Rs 125. I have been told he does not have a real medical degree, but I know of several people (including myself) who have been treated by him and he has helped them.

If you have jaundice (hepatitis) there is a good doctor in downtown Vrindavana who is the son of Shyamasakhi. He treats you by first giving you a bath and rubbing you with tree bark. The water will turn yellow if you have jaundice. The worst the jaundice, the more yellow the water will be. He then gives you some medicine to take. You then have to return for more baths. You can ask the rickshaw-walas outside the ISKCON Temple to bring you to Shyamasakhi, as many of them know how to get there. His house is down a side street right next to the STD phones, on the road between Banke Bihari Temple and Loi Bazaar (Bhankandi Bazaar).

Across the street from the ISKCON temple at the pharmacy, Dr. Guptaji prescribes Ayurvedic medicines that I have found to be helpful with basic ailments, such as infections, cuts and basic stomach disorders.

For a long-term illness I recommend going to Delhi and seeing Dr Triguna or going to the Tibetan Clinic. Both places have been given good recommendation for being effective. For any long-term illnesses I highly recommend that you consider going to see Dr Triguna in Delhi. He is one of the best Ayurvedic doctors in India, if not the best.

WARNING! Often doctors in Vrindavan try to convince foreigners to get expensive long-term treatment for stomach, liver and other disorders, that they do not need. It is a good idea to get a second opinion before buying expensive medicine.

Hospitals
There are two hospitals in Vrindavana: Saraf Hospital and Rama Krishna Hospital. I have not heard anything very good about either place and I would not put too much faith in the doctors in these hospitals. But in an emergency they will definitely do. I do know of several people who have gone to these hospitals and had their lives saved. Methodist Hospital in Mathura is better than these two places. If there is a serious illness it is suggested that you go to a hospital in Delhi, where the doctors can often be excellent.
Saraf Hospital, Bhaktivedanta Swami Road (also called Chatikara Road), is on the road going out of town past the ISKCON Temple. It is open all day except Tuesday.

Rama Krishna Hospital (442-310), Mathura Road, near the bus stand. It is open 7 to 11 am except Wednesday. Visiting hours are supposed to be 5 to 7 pm from April to Sept. and 4 to 6 pm from October to March.

Methodist Hospital is located just outside of Mathura, on the road between Vrindavana and Mathura.

If there is a serious illness it is highly suggested to go to a hospital in Delhi, and not waste you time with the local hospital. Recommended is Apollo Hospital, which is located just outside of Delhi on the Mathura to Delhi Road.

Medical Shops
After you see a medical doctor it is a good idea to ask the doctor where you should go to get the medicines that he prescribes. He will usually know exactly what shop has the medicine.

There is a medical shop directly across from the ISKCON temple. If you just came out of the main entrance of the temple onto the street the shop is on your right, about five shops down. They have both western and Ayurvedic medicines. There is also an Ayurvedic doctor, Dr. Gupta, who comes there in the evening. As it is a small shop, many times they do not have certain medicines. They can usually get the medicine the next day, if you inform them what you want, but they often do not get the medicines that you order. If you order something from them and they do not get it the next day I would suggest that you go to one of the shops downtown, which usually have a much larger selection. Often this shop is more expensive than shops in downtown Vrindavana.

There is a well-supplied medical shop at the end of Loi Bazaar, at the turnoff to the Banke Bihari temple called Gupta Medical Shop. Dr Gupta, who is an Ayurvedic doctor, speaks good English and is helpful. It is across the street from the Bankhandi Mahadeva temple.

There is a medical shop right next to Dr Nangia clinic in Loi Bazaar.
