Kokilavana
Forest
Kokilavana
is close to Nandagram. Kokil is a cuckoo. Sometimes Krishna would
dress up like a cuckoo bird here and cry out in a voice imitating
the sound of a cuckoo. It is said that he would do this to call the
gopis. Upon hearing this sound they would sneak out of their houses
in the middle of the night and come to see Krishna.
It is said that Krishna used to disguise himself and
meet with Srimati Radharani here.
There is a Radha Krishna temple here. The Deities in
this temple are Radha Kokilavana-bihari. There is
also a Deity of Lord Narasimhadeva in this temple. Below Narasimha
is Prahlada Maharaja on the left, and Kapila Muni on the right.
Next to this temple there is a deity of Shani
(Saturn). On Saturdays, the day ruled by Saturn, many people
come here to get a benediction from Saturn, sometimes over 100,000
people in one day. They put oil on this deity to worship him. Saturn’s
blessings are overwhelming, but his wrath can cause great misery.
Many people come here to rid themselves of the bad effects of Saturn
astrologically.
To the left of the main temple is Kokilavana
Kunda.
There is also a Giriraja Temple that
contains a Govardhana-shila, Hanuman temple, and Siva temple here.
How To Get Here This place is about
5km northeast of Nandagram. From Nandagram you take the road that
goes to Kosi. Before you reach Javat, after going about three km,
there is a road that goes to the left (north), which has a white 8m
high square arch over it. The road ends after about 1½ km (1
mile) at the Kokilavana temple. There is nothing around this temple,
but forest.
