We are also doing research work to publish information on companies and products that are free of animal products & animal testing and much more We Greatly Need Your Help There is a great selection of vegetarian and vegetarian-friendly restaurants and health food stores in the Washington DC area. There are several places within the city’s borders and another ten or so excellent vegetarian restaurants in the towns off the beltway surrounding the city. Washington hosts the annual VegFest, which has an excellent line up of speakers and events. The Vegetarian Society of DC (http://www.vsdc.org) is an organization that promotes the benefits of a vegetarian diet and works to unite and those interested in vegetarianism in the Washington, DC area. It is the oldest vegetarian society in the US. The popular, fully vegetarian East Indian Amma Vegetarian Kitchen has a wide selection of good tasting vegetarian dishes. It is a good place for a special event. The recommended Soul Vegetarian Café, near Howard University, serves excellent vegan Soul African, American, Italian and Middle Eastern dishes. The Indian Delight serves authentic vegetarian Indian food in a typical food court in a not-so-typical mall that is part of a train and metro station The upscale, fully organic Asia Nora serves excellent New American, Asian and International cuisines. They have a delicious five-course vegetarian sampler that gets high recommendations. It is formal place that has dark walnut tables, fancy architecture, and low lighting and is considered to be one of the better restaurants in DC. People Garden Coop is an excellent natural food store that has a mainly vegan and organic deli that serves vegan salads, falafel, dolma, spring rolls, soups, veggie stew and sandwiches. Secret of Nature Health Food Store & Café has a large variety of good tasting vegetarian dishes including soups, salads, sandwiches, raw fruit pies and more. Senbeb Co-op Natural Food Store has a good vegan-friendly deli. There are a great selection of excellent vegetarian restaurants and first-class health food stores in the towns surrounding Washington DC. In Maryland on the north side of Washington DC there are several vegetarian restaurants. Everlasting Life Coop, in Capitol Heights on the east
side of DC, has a fully vegetarian café, the excellent Soul Vegetarian
Gourmet Restaurant that specializes in great tasting raw cuisine. The Mango Grove, in Columbia Maryland. is a vegetarian South Indian place that gets excellent reviews. The Madras Vegetarian Indian Cuisine in Gaithersburg
is a big place serving North and South Indian food. Its lunch buffet
is a very good value. In the northwest suburb of Rockville there are few excellent vegetarian Chinese places. The Vegetable Garden, on Rockville Pike, gets rated by many of my friends and newspaper reviews as being one of the best vegetarian Chinese places in the country. It is highly recommended. Yuan Fu Vegetarian is a vegetarian Chinese place that serves a selection of mock meat dishes and other delicious Chinese food. There are also two large health food stores in Rockville which both have excellent delis and very good organic produce sections, Fresh Fields (Whole Foods) and My Organic Market (MOM'S). Rockville is also the home of Pangea (www.veganstore.com), which is an excellent store that carries vegan products such as food items, belts, clothing, books, videos, wallets, bags, gifts, candles, and dog & cat products. They have a large mail order business and are a great place for shopping. Also in Rockville are two other places with good vegetarian selections. Amada Amante serves a six-course Gourmet Vegetarian Tasting Menu. Hard Times Café has several types of good vegetarian chilies, veggie burgers and salads. Nut House Pizzeria is a mainly vegetarian, kosher pizza place serving excellent Italian and Israeli cuisine. It has many vegetarian options including pizzas, knishes, soy meatball subs made with vegetarian meats, falafel, veggie burgers and Israeli salads. The pleasant Woodlands Vegetarian Indian Restaurant, in Fairfax Virginia, has excellent South Indian food. There are a few excellent vegetarian restaurants in the southwest suburb of Vienna in Virginia and the excellent Fresh Fields (Whole Foods Market) natural food store and vegetarian-friendly cafe. The fully vegetarian South Indian Amma Vegetarian Kitchen gets high ratings. The beautifully decorated Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant serves fully vegetarian International, Japanese, Chinese and Continental cuisines. It is considered by many to be the best vegetarian restaurant in the DC area.
