a vegetarian in the US because of its great selection of pure vegetarian
restaurants and its large amount of health food stores. There are
over 50 vegetarian restaurants in Manhattan and over 10 each in both
Brooklyn and Queens. Many of these places are amongst the best in
the country.
A vegetarian friend of mine mentioned to me, that when you are walking around the East Village you are for the most part no more than a few blocks from a vegetarian restaurant. In Manhattan in a ten block area there can be several excellent health food stores to choice from. There is a great selection of possible cuisines available in New York such as American, Chinese, Italian, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, South American, Soul, Caribbean, Indian, Raw, and Israeli, Middle Eastern, Greek, European and more There is a large amount of Indian, Middle Eastern, Chinese and Kosher places which often tend to have a wide amount of vegetarian options. There is also a great selection of vegetarian-friendly and health orientated places in New York City. New York has a great selection of vegetarian-friendly burrito places that serve a selection of vegetarian burritos. Benny’s Burritos has a vegetarian and vegan menu. Burritoville, which has several branches around the city, has reasonably priced excellent vegetarian burritos. They offer options of tofu sour cream, rice, black beans and grilled vegetables. In Manhattan is one of the few gourmet natural cooking schools in the country, the Natural Gourmet Cookery School on West 21st Street, which teaches a variety of cuisines emphasizing vegan and vegetarian techniques both for professional and home cooks. The school offers an excellent vegetarian Friday Night feast, where the public can indulge their senses in eating a delicious five-course vegetarian dinner made by a chef instructor and students. The Vegetarian Center of New York City, on East 27th Street, is a worth-while source of interesting information on vegetarianism. Vegetarian Center of New York City For more information about vegetarian and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in New York City check out our book USA Vegetarian Restaurants and Natural Food Stores, which list over 2,500 places. Harlem Strictly Roots, on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard in Harlem, serves vegan West Indian Rastafarian food at very reasonable prices. They have good veggie burgers and non-dairy desserts. Upper East Side Candle Café, which serves a vegetarian International cuisine, is one of my favorite restaurants in the country. It has everything: excellent food, a detailed menu, great relaxed atmosphere, and a good location on the Upper East Side The Candle 79 is a new place at 154 East 79th Street, which is owned by the same people as the Candle Cafe and is also a great place. Upper West Side One of the more unique places in the country is the purely vegetarian Italian Café Viva Pizzeria, which has a great selection of vegetarian pizzas, Lasagna, calzones, Ravioli and sandwiches. They have three branches, one on the Upper West Side, one in the East Village and the other in Brooklyn. Mana, on the Upper West Side, is a Japanese-style macrobiotic place that also has some very good International dishes. They all have delicious food including scallion pancakes and Zen Veggie-burger (sunflower seeds, kale, brown rice), Vegetable Dumplings and Stir-fried Brown Rice. The one in Union Square is the original one and it is like two restaurants in one. The one upstairs is formal and upscale with tuxedoed waiters and is expensive.
