How to Use a Neti PotIt only takes a few simple steps to use a Neti Pot. It is basically as easy as brushing the teeth. Usually the process takes only about five or ten minutes. About four ounces (1/8 of a litre of water) should be poured through each nostril. Some people prefer more. First mix about one cup (8 oz) of warm water with about one-fourth teaspoon of salt. Or 1/4 teaspoon of salt to about a one-quarter of a litre of water. This is basically the same consistency of a normal saline constitution of the body. . The water should be as close to the normal body temperature as possible (98 degrees). It should taste like a person's tears. It is important to make sure the salt is totally dissolved before using the water and if it is not it may cause irritation. Then pour about half the water (4 oz) into the Neti Pot. You could also just add a half cup of water with 1/8 teaspoons of salt directly into the Neti Pot, rather than mixing them separately. The amount of salt is just a general guideline and depending on what you feel comfortable with you can either increase or decrease the amount of salt used. If the nose is dry you may want to add a bit more salt. Also you may want to reduce the amount of salt if it is irritating. If the nostrils are especially clogged you may have to use substantially more water to get the job done properly Regrettably normal table salt usually contains iodine and other chemicals (so it flows nicely) so it should not be used. It is best to use distilled or purified water rather than tap water. It will have to be heated a bit on a stove to bring it up to the correct temperature of body temperature or 98 degrees. Many people just get warm water from the tap which is alright, but it is better purified water as tap water often contains chlorine that is it often irritating for many people. When water with chlorine is used for a long time usually the irritation effect will increase so it is not a good idea to use it over a long period It
is a good idea to test the temperature of the water with your finger
or pour a little onto your forearm as if it is too hot it can be painful
when put into the nose. It is better that the water is a little hotter
than the arm rather than cooler than the arm. Bend forward from the waist over the sink and turn the head so the tip of the nose is lower than any other part of the head and tilt the head to the right so that your left nostril is the lowest point. The chin should basically be above the forehead. Place the spout of the neti pot gently directly inside the upper nostrils Then pour the water into one of nostrils and let it drain out through the other one as it flows around the septum into the nasopharynos (nasal cavity) into the other nasal passage and then out the other nostril. Let the water flow through the nose while breathing through your mouth at the same time. After a few seconds the water will run out the left (lower) nostril. After the water flows through your nose remove the pot and stand up. Then blow out through both nostrils slowly to clear the water and mucous out of the nose. Use about a half a cup water (4 oz or one-eighth litre) for each side. But if you need more water to clear your nasals use what you need. The water should not drain back to the throat but through the lower nostril. After the water all drains out hold down with your finger the nostril that the water just drained out of. Then blow air softly through the nostril that you just poured the water into to drain any water than may be remaining in your nasal passage. After you clean one side of the nostrils till your head in the opposite direction and pour water into the upper nostril. Often mucous will pass out naturally when you pour the water through your nostrils. As the water passes through the nostrils it collects and moves out of the body mucous and contaminations collected in it. It also helps to keep the sinuses unobstructed and clean. When placing the spout of the pot place it clearly into the nose so the water will not fall out when you pour. It may take you a few times before you can do perfectly. You may have to twist it a bit. Try to get the spout to point directly into the nasal passage. Open
your mouth and breathe through you mouth while using the Neti Pot. If your nose is still blocked by mucus after doing both nostrils you can repeat the process if you like up to two more time. If a person has high blood pressure it may be advised to only drain the nose while standing up Once jala neti has been performed, it is important to eliminate any remaining water from the nose. As
the Neti Pot is for personally hygiene you should not share it with
other people just as you would not share your toothbrush or tongue scrapper.
