Arsikere
Janata Hotel, opposite the bus station, has inexpensive rooms for Rs 60/100 and a vegetarian restaurant.

Bangalore
Kamat Hotel, Subedar Chatram Rd, by the bus station, is an inexpensive place serving South Indian snacks and some North Indian items.
Hotel Abhishek, 19/2 Kumara Krupa Rd, High Grounds, has two vegetarian restaurants.
Suvana Mandir, 76 Mission Rd, serves South Indian food, bhelpuri, samosas, and other snacks. It is a good value.
Woodlands Hotel, 5 Sampangi Tank Rd, has an outside South Indian restaurant and inside the excellent Sunheri Restaurant, serving a good selection of Western and Indian items. Open 11.30 am to 3.30 pm and 7 to 11 pm.
Woods, 177-178 Commercial Street is a good place. Thalis are served from 11.30 to 3 pm and 7.30 to 9.45 pm.
Chalukya Hotel, Race Course Road, near the West End Hotel, has a good South Indian restaurant.

Badami
The Laxmi Vilas has good vegetarian meals. The Geeta Darshini has inexpensive food. Murali Café serves vegetarian thalis at lunch.

Belur
The restaurants in Hotel Belur serve basic vegetarian meals and South Indian food.
The restaurant at the Hotel Mayura Velapuri besides serving a vegetarian thali also serves Continental dishes.

Bidar
Udupi Krishna is a popular vegetarian place with inexpensive, unlimited thalis.

Bijapur
Prabhu Cafeteria, Station Rd, next to the Hotel Tourist, has very good, cheap dosas, lassis, and snacks.
Samrat Hotel, Station Rd, has a good vegetarian restaurant.
Madhuvan, off MG Rd, is an outdoor place serving South Indian thalis.
Swapna Lodge Restaurant has good vegetarian food.

Gokarna
Pai Hotel has good, cheap vegetarian meals and dosas.
Shri Raghvendra Restaurant has good vegetarian food.
Hotel Vinaya, on the main street, has vegetarian food.
Shri Shakti Cold Drinks, Car St., near the temple, makes fresh juice, homemade cheese, breads, and cakes.

Gulbarga
Raj Rajeshwari (25881), Vasant Nagar, Mill Rd, five minutes from the bus stand has a vegetarian restaurant.
Hotel Aditya (202-039) has a good, clean vegetarian restaurant. Recommended.
Pariwar (21522; fax 22060) has a good South Indian restaurant, but the hotel is often booked.

Hampi (Vijayanagar)
There are several places to eat along the bazaar serving Indian and Continental food (humus and macaroni).
Shankar Restaurant, near the tourist office, is one of the better places. It serves pancakes, sandwiches, and good South Indian food.
Mango Tree, about half a km west of the bazaar near the river, has good thalis.

Hassan
Vaishnavi Lodging, Harsha Mahal Rd, near the bus station, has a good vegetarian restaurant. So does the Hotel Mahaveer.
Abiruchi Hotel, B-M Rd, west of City Circle, has a good vegetarian restaurant serving North Indian and Chinese foods. Recommended.

Hospet
Shanthi Restaurant is at the Hotel Vishwa, across from the bus stand.
Madhu Paradise at the Malligi Tourist Home, is a good vegetarian place. It has corn flakes and toast breakfasts, snacks all day, and thalis 10.30 am to 3 pm and 7 to 10.30 pm.
Hotel Priyadarshini has a restaurant with good service. It is most likely the best place in town. The lassis are especially good. Thalis served from noon to 3 pm and from 7 to 10.30 pm.

Hubli
The Woodlands Hotel has a good restaurant.
Hotel Kailash (52234) has a vegetarian restaurant.

Madikeri (Mercara)
Hotel Veglands is a good, popular, cheap vegetarian restaurant.

Mangalore
Palimar, at the Hotel Manorama on KS Rao Rd, has both good vegetarian food and good service.
Kamadhenu Vegetarian Restaurant is in the Roopa Hotel.
Pai Cafe in the Navaratna Hotel, by the bus stand, serves very good vegetarian food.
The Moti Mahal Hotel, Falnir Rd, has the Madhuvan vegetarian restaurant serving good Indian, Chinese, and Continental food.
The popular Dhanyavad, at the intersection of Lighthouse Hill Rd and K S Rao Rd, has inexpensive meals.

Mysore
Akshaya Restaurant, in the Dasaprakash Hotel, Gandhi Square, has good, inexpensive thalis.
Dasaprakash Paradise, about 5km out of the city center, is one the best restaurants in town and serves good ice cream.
Hotel Siddhartha, 73/1 Guest House Rd, about a half km from the long-distance bus station, has a good vegetarian restaurant. One part of the restaurant serves thalis and the other serves North Indian side orders. Very popular.
Samrat, in the Hotel Indra Bhavan, Dhanvantri Rd, has good, cheap, individual and thali meals for about Rs 60.

Sravanabelagola
Hotel Raghu (57238), near the bottom of the steps going up Indragiri Hill, has a vegetarian restaurant.

Udupi (Udipi)
Woodlands Restaurant, a five-minute walk from the Sri Krishna Temple, just southwest of Car St, is one of the best restaurants in India. The thali is both excellently prepared and a good value. The owner personally ensured that everything was done perfectly. Highly recommended.
Dwarika, Car St, facing Temple Square, is a good modern place serving Western and South Indian food and ice cream.
For good, authentic South Indian veg cuisine, try the Anuradha Restaurant on Car Street, across from Dwarika.
Mexican Garden, in the Kediyoor Hotel, has a garden location and good food. The vegetarian restaurant in the Kediyoor Hotel is a good and reasonably priced.

We believe this book to be by far the best practical guide about India, and is definitely worth purchasing. The words meat, fish or eggs are not mentioned in this book accept to warn against them.
