Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary (Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary)

This park, covering around 950 sq km, is home for tigers, elephants, Nilgiri tahrs (known as ibex), panthers, wild boars, gaurs, spotted deer, bears, porcupines and many species of birds. It is unlikely to see very much wildlife in this park, but the park is a pleasant place to visit. It has just recently been renamed Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary

Information
The Park Reception Office and most of the places to stay are at Topslip, which is 35km southwest of the town of Pollachi. Accommodation must be to be booked in advance at the Wildlife Warden Office (04259 25356), 178 Meenkarai Rd, in Pollachi. It is open Mon to Fri 9 am to 5 pm. Accommodation can not be booked on the weekends or holidays.

The best time to visit the park is from January to February and June. It is recommended to have your own vehicle to visit the park. Topslip (740m) can be chilly in the winter.

If you are visiting the park for the day you can go directly to Top Slip. To enter the park at Top Slip costs Rs 10, Rs 10 for a camera, Rs 50 for a video camera, and Rxe "Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary" s 10 for a car. You can also enter xe "Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary" the park at Parambilulam in Kerala. The park is open from 6 am to 6 pm for day visitors.

Private vehicles can drive around in the park. Visitors must take one of the park departments vehicles around the park between 8 am and 5 pm (1 hr, Rs 40).

It is possible to walk around the park. You must have a guide with you and you are allowed to walk in the park for a maximum of four hours for Rs 70 per person. 
   
Where to Stay and Eat
At Topslip there are dorms for Rs 50 and four fairly basic lodges with for around Rs 275 , which must be booked in advance at the Wildlife Warden’s Office in Pollachi. Accommodation is usually limited to only one night. Ambuli Illam, at Topslip, 2km from the reception center, is the best place to stay. It has a restaurant.

In Pollachi there are several places to stay. Ramesh Lodge has rooms for Rs 150. Sakthi Hotel (04259 23060), Coimbatore Rd, has rooms for Rs 270 and Rs 550 with A/C. It has a very good restaurant.

Travel
There are regular buses from Coimbatore and Palani to Pollachi, which is the nearest big town. There are two buses a day from Pollachi to the park at 6 am and 3 pm. The bus returns to Pollachi at 8 am and 6 pm. A taxi from Pollachi is around Rs 500.

From Pollachi, there are trains to Coimbatore and Dindigul.
