Train  There are two railway stations in Bangalore. Reservations are made at, and most trains depart from, Bangalore City railway station, located on the west edge of the city center. Trains to every part of India depart from there, including several daily trains to Mysore. If you are planning to stay in the MG Rd area, it is best to get off the train at the Cantonment station.

There is a prepaid taxi stand at the station. An auto-rickshaw to the MG Rd area is Rs 20.
Bangalore is one of the more difficult places in India from which to book a ticket. However, the bus service is good out of Bangalore. There are no tourist quotas on any trains. It is usually possible to use the emergency quota to get on a train. You do this by first purchasing a ticket for the train, then go and see the assistant commercial manager in the Divisional Office Building.

There is a Tourist Booking Counter in the computerized booking center just outside the main station (Mon to Sat 8 am to 7 pm, Sun 8 am to 2 pm). Counter #14, the first one to the right as you enter, has a sign that says “Disabled and Freedom Fighters Only.” It is also for foreign tourists. Other counters will not handle foreign bookings. If you have an Indrail pass, go to the Chief Reservation Supervisor’s office on the first floor and your reservation will be guaranteed.

Many of the long-distance trains are slow, and you may have to change trains. To Goa, you take the Ranichannamma Exp (8 pm) to Londa, then a bus or taxi from there.

Some trains are: Calcutta Bangalore-Guwahati #5625 (11.30, 25 hr; Thu, Sun); Chennai Bangalore-Chennai Exp #6024 (8.15 am, 7 hr), Brindhavan Exp #2640 (2.30 pm, 6 hr), Shatabdi Exp #2008 (4.30 pm, 5 hr, daily except Tues); Delhi Karnataka Exp #2627 (6.25 pm, 42 hr); Rajdhani Exp #2429 (6.35 pm, 34 hr; Mon, Wed, Thur); Ernakulam Kanniyakumari Exp #6526 (9 pm, 13 hr); Hospet Hampi Express #6592 (10 pm, 9 hr); Hyderabad Bangalore-Secunderabad Exp #7086 (5.05 pm, 16 hr); Mumbai Udyan Exp #6530 (8.30 pm, 24 hr); Mysore Chennai-Mysore Exp #6222 (7.15 am, 2½ hr), Shatabdi Exp #2007 (11 am, 2 hr daily except Tues), Chamundi Exp #6216 (6.15 pm, 3 hr); and Thiruvananthapuram Kanniyakumari Exp #6526 (9 pm, 18 hr).

Bus  All long-distance buses depart from the Central (KSRTC) Bus Station, directly across from the City railway station, in the west part of town. Karnataka State Road Transport (KSRTC) (287-3377) operates buses within the state.
KSRTC also operates interstate buses, as do the state companies of Andhra Pradesh (APSRTC) (287-3915, platform 11), Goa (Kadamba, near the computerized booking office), Tamil Nadu (JJTC) (287-6974), platform 12. The interstate bus companies’ offices are at Platform 13 in the Central bus station (287-1261). You can do computerized advance booking here for KSRTC express and deluxe buses. You can also make advance bookings for buses operated by other state bus companies. It is best to book in advance for all long-distance journeys.

There are buses to Mysore (3 hr, every 15 minutes), Hassan (5 hr, eight daily), Hospet (11 hr, fifteen daily), Jog Falls (8 hr, five daily) Mangalore (8 hr, four daily), Chennai (9 hr, twenty daily), Hyderabad (16 hr, ten daily), Madurai (15 hr, fifteen daily), Panaji (three daily), Ooty (8 hr), and Ernakulam (15 hr). There are two direct buses to Hampi. The bus trip to Hospet is a rough trip; it is better to take the train. Goa’s Kadamba buses go to Panaji (14 hr) at 5 am and 6 pm.

Besides state buses, private bus companies operate buses between Bangalore and other cities. The prices are higher, but the buses are usually better with more leg room. You can book these buses with travel agents around the railway or bus stations. The video buses are extremely loud and should be avoided.
