This park (640 sq km), located 95km southwest of Mysore, is home to tigers, panthers, elephants, gaurs, wild dogs, flying squirrels, sambars, barking deer, sloth bears, and many species of birds. You are unlikely to see a tiger.

Entrance to the park is Rs 150. There is a Forest Dept bus tour of the park at 5 pm. It is possible to view wildlife from a hide near a waterhole, and to visit the Elephant Training Camp at Haballa.
The best time to visit is between October and May, especially during April and May.

Accommodations should be booked in the park at least two weeks in advance at the Forest & Wildlife Division (08222 52041) in Hunsur. You can also contact Wildlife Division (0821 221-159), Vani Vilas Rd, Mysore; or Chief Wildlife Warden (341-993), Aranya Bhavan, 18 Cross, Malleswaram, Bangalore 560003.

Where to Stay and Eat
Near the reception center in the sanctuary are two Forest Department Lodges, both of which have rooms for Rs 100 per person and dorm beds for Rs 30. They should definitely be booked two weeks in advance (see above). The road to the lodges closes at 6 pm.

Wild Lands Resorts in Murkal has rooms for Rs 550/700 and dorm beds for Rs 100. It is overpriced. You need your own transportation to get to the park. It can be reserved at the Forest Development Corp office (080 345-192) in Bangalore.

Kabini River Lodge, near Karapur, on the road going from Mananathavadi to Mysore, 3km from the park’s south gate, has rooms for $125 per person, which include meals. The lodge was once used by the maharajas for hunting. You should book the lodge with Jungle Lodges & Resorts (080 559-7025 ; fax 558-6163), Shrungar Shopping Centre, MG Rd, Bangalore. They can also arrange transportation to the lodge.

Travel
Direct buses departing from the Central bus stand in Mysore go to Hunsur (3 hr, 10km from the park) at 7 am and 1.30 pm.
