Hubli is a major railway junction for trains going to Goa, Mumbai, and northern Karnataka. The Kannada Research Institute Museum at Karnataka University displays sculptures, ancient manuscripts, and an interesting painting of Nataraja.

Most of the hotels are near the railway station. The bus station is a fifteen-minute walk from the railway station.

Where to Stay
The Retiring Rooms at the railway station are Rs 100/125 and dorm beds are Rs 40.
Hotel Ajantha (362-216) has rooms with common bath for Rs 100/125 and Rs 125/175 with bath. 24-hour checkout.
Ashoka Towers Hotel (362-271), Lamington Rd, a half km from the station, has clean rooms for Rs 175/225 and Rs 600 with A/C. It is a good value.
Hubli Woodlands (62246) has rooms for Rs 400/450 and Rs 500/600 with A/C.
Hotel Vipra (362-336) has good rooms with bath for Rs 135/175.
Hotel Kailash (352-235) has comfortable rooms with bath, hot water, and a TV for Rs 400/500 and Rs 550/700 with A/C. It has a vegetarian restaurant.

Where to Eat
Parag Restaurant, by the Modern Lodge, has a rooftop section. It has decent Indian and Chinese food (Rs 50 main dish).
Royal Palace, near the Ashok Hotel, has good North Indian food (Rs 60 main dish).
The Woodlands Hotel has a good restaurant.

Travel
Air The airport is 8km from the center of town.

Train The booking office is open daily 8 am to 8 pm. There are usually two daily express trains to Mumbai and Bangalore. There are express trains to Hospet (for Hampi) at 10 am and 4.30 pm. To get to Bijapur, you take a train to Gadag (1½ hr, same train that goes to Hospet), then take another train from there.
To get to Goa you have to get a train to Londa (2 hr).

Bus There are regular buses to Bangalore (9 hr) and Hospet (4 hr). KSRTC (five daily) and Goa Kadamba bus company (five daily, Gate #10) buses go to Goa daily. There are also buses to Mumbai (15 hr), Mangalore (10 hr), Jog Falls, Gokarna, Mysore (10 hr), and Bijapur.
Across from the bus stand are private bus companies offering deluxe buses to Goa, Bangalore, Pune, Mangalore, Mumbai, and Bijapur.

Belgaum

Belgaum was the capital of the local area in the 12th and 13th century.

The Masjid-Sata Mosque (1519) is one of the most interesting mosques in town. There are also a few interesting Jain temples.

Where to Stay
Hotel Sheetal (429-222), a couple of minutes walk from the bus stand, has clean rooms with bath for Rs 125/180. It has a vegetarian restaurant.
Hotel Mayura Mallaprabha (470-781), near the lake, is a modern hotel with cottages with bath for Rs 200/250.
Hotel Keerthi (423-332), on the right near the bus stand, has clean, comfortable rooms with bath for Rs 175/300. It has a restaurant.
Hotel Sanman Deluxe (430-777), College Rd, has comfortable rooms for Rs 300/500. Foreign Exchange facilities.

Travel
There are no flights from Belgaum. The Indian Airlines office (420-801) is in the Hotel Sanman Deluxe, College Rd.

T here are express trains to Mumbai (14 hr), Bangalore (16 hr), Delhi, Hubli, and Londa (for Goa).

There are buses to Goa, Mumbai, Pune, and Hubli.
