Located
in Shantiniketan, 3km from Bolpur and 135km north of Calcutta, is the
Visvabharati University. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), a poet and
writer, who won a Nobel Prize in 1913, founded a school here in 1901,
which developed into this university where many of the classes are held
outside. A few of the famous students from this university are Indira
Gandhi and the Queen of Jaipur. The university is only open to visitors
after university hours in the afternoon, and in the morning during vacations.
It is closed on Wed.
There
is a Museum and Art Gallery in the Uttarayan complex
that displays Tagore’s manuscripts, paintings and personal items.
Open Thursday to Monday 10.30 am to 1 pm and 2 to 4.30 pm, half day
on Tuesday.
The
Posh Mela in Shantiniketan is a big festival held between
December 22 to 25, which has dance, music, Bauls (wandering musicians)
and folk performances. It is a popular event. In the village of Surul,
4km from Shantiniketan, there are nice terracotta temples.
Where to Stay
The International Guest House, managed by the university,
has cheap rooms and meals.
Bolpur Lodge (52662), Bolpur, has a selection of rooms
and dorm beds.
Shantiniketan Tourist Lodge (West Bengal Tourism) (252699;
fax: 252-398) is a good place with rooms for Rs 350/450 and Rs 650 to
Rs 850 with A/C.
Chhuti Holiday Resort (52692), 241 Charupalli, has
comfortable rooms with air-cooling for Rs 700/800 and Rs 1300/1500 with
A/C.
The Retiring Rooms at the Bolpur railway station are
a good value at Rs 175.
Travel
Many trains come through here. The Shantiniketan Exp departs from Howrah
in Calcutta at 10 am and gets to Bolpur at 12.30 pm. It departs Bolpur
at 1 pm for Calcutta. The Darjeeling Mail departs to New Jalpaiguri
at 10.30 pm and arrives at 8.30 am in time to get the toy-train to Darjeeling.
