Travel - Jaipur

Local Travel
To get to a hotel around Station or MI Roads (near the railway station) from the railway station or bus station should cost no more than Rs 25 (actually Rs 15). Expect to be asked for at least Rs 50, if not Rs 100.

You can rent a taxi for the day from the Tourist Office at the RTDC Tourist Hotel. The prices are set. Across the street there is a large independent taxi stand with set prices, which may be cheaper. You can also usually rent a taxi through your hotel.

Travel
Air The airport (255-0222) is 14km south of town. The airport bus into town costs Rs 35 and a taxi costs Rs 250-350. The airport bus departs from Sindhi Camp bus stand to the airport.

It is best to book a flight as soon as possible. There are flights to Agra, Delhi, Mumbai, Udaipur, Calcutta, Varanasi, Aurangabad, and Ahmedabad.

Indian Airlines have flights to and from Jaipur. There are flights to Kolkata (Calcutta) (2 weekly, $250), Delhi (2 daily, $75), Mumbai (3 daily, $185) and Udaipur (daily, $100).

The Indian Airlines office (274-3500, 274-3324) is at Nehru Place, Tonk Rd.

STIC Travels (237-2965), 4th Floor, Ganpati Plaza, MI Rd is the agent for Royal Nepal, Royal Brunei, Sri Lankan, Continental and ANA.
Malaysia, Korean and El AL use the same office at 304 Ganpati Plaza, MI Rd (23704038)

There are some international airlines offices at the Jaipur Towers, MI Rd. Kuwait Airlines (237-2898); Austrian Airlines (237-7695; Gulf Air (237-5430); Royal Jordanian (237-5430); United (237-7062), France (237-9509),

Travel agents to book flights are Rajasthan Travel Service (236-5408), Ganapati Plaza,
Travel Care (237-1842), Jaipur Tower, MI Rd.

Satyam Travels, Chameliwala Market (237-4490); fax 370-843), ground floor of Jaipur Towers building, is established.

Rail  The railway station is 1km west of the old city, by the main concentration of hotels. Most trains should be booked a day in advance. The computerized booking office (131 to 133) is open Mon to Sat 8 am to 8 pm , and Sun 8 am to 2 pm. There is a counter for tourists with a sign that says “Freedom Fighters and Foreign Tourists.” If you have a problem getting a train reservation, go to the station superintendent and ask for his assistance.

The fully A/C Shatabdi Exp is the fastest train to Delhi. From Delhi the Pink City Express departs at 5.50 am. It continues to Ajmer (Pushkar) and Udaipur (10 hr). The Pink City Exp to Delhi departs Jaipur at 5 pm and arrives in Delhi at 10.15 pm. The Chetak Exp leaves Delhi at 1 pm and arrives in Jaipur at 8.30 pm. The Ahmedabad Mail leaves Delhi at 10 pm and arrives in Jaipur at 4.30 am. The overnight Jaipur-Delhi Shekawati Exp #9734 departs Jaipur for Delhi at 5.15 pm (12 hr).

You can connect with trains to south and western Gujarat by going to Ahmedabad. There are several express trains to Ajmer and Abu Road.

To Mathura is the Marudhar Exp #4854 (3.20 pm) which arrives in Mathura at 8.50 pm. The Marudhar Exp #4853 departs Mathura at 6.45 am, and arrives in Jaipur at 12.15 pm.
Agra  Marudhar Exp #4854 (3.20 pm, 7 hr). It returns to Jaipur at 4.40 am, arriving at 12.15 pm. This is a popular train and should be booked in advance.

Ajmer Shatabdi Exp #2015 (10.40 am, 2 hr), Jaipur-Ajmer Link Exp #2431 (11.30 am, 2 hr); Ahmedabad Rajdhani Exp #2958 (7.45 pm, 11 hr), Ahmedabad Mail #9106 (4.40 am, 14 hr); Bikaner Jaipur Bikaner Intercity Exp #2468 (3.20 pm, 7 hr); Chittorgarh Chetak Exp #9616 (8½ hr); Hyderabad (Secunderabad) 1.40 pm; Jodhpur Intercity Exp #2465 (5.30 pm, 5½ hr) Jodhpur Exp #4859 (11.30, 7 hr); Udaipur Chetak Express #9615 (10.10 pm, 12½ hr), Ahmedabad Exp #9943 (4.40 am, 13 hr). 

Bus Long-distance buses depart from the Interstate Bus Terminal (220-5790 reservation office) on Station Road. Deluxe buses can and should be booked a day in advance at Platform 3. Deluxe buses depart from Platform 3, which is in the right rear corner of the bus station yard. Express buses can be booked at Ashok Travels near the ITDC Tourist Office. Bus Station number is220-6143

There are deluxe buses to Delhi, Agra (5 hr, 5 daily), Ajmer (2½ hr, 8 daily), Udaipur (10 hr, 4 daily), Jodhpur (7 hr, 7 daily), Jaisalmer (13 hr, deluxe 9.30 pm), Kota (7 hr, 5 daily), Chittorgarh (8 hr, 5 daily) and Bharatpur (3 hr). There are frequent buses to Ajmer and a few direct buses to Pushkar. There is a direct local bus (16 hr) to Jaisalmer and a faster night bus (14 hr).

From Delhi (305km, 5 hr, 20 daily) you can get a deluxe bus to Jaipur from the Interstate Bus Terminal. Also deluxe buses depart from the Rajasthan Tourist Office at Bikaner House, near Indian Gate, and from the ITDC Office.
From the Vrindavan (6½ hr) bus station a local bus leaves daily to Jaipur at 5.45 am. From the New bus stand in Mathura, buses depart to Jaipur (6 hr, Rs 70) almost every hour.

Private companies offer deluxe buses to many places. They can be arranged through the travel agencies around town. The overnight deluxe video buses offered by private companies can be extremely noisy.

Car  The easiest way to get to Jaipur from Delhi or Vrindavan is to take a taxi. It is expensive, but it is by far the most comfortable way to travel. Once in Jaipur you can continue to use the taxi for a daily fee. You should make sure the taxi driver knows Jaipur.

The price from Vrindavan is Rs 2200 roundtrip in the same day and Rs 800 a day to use the taxi in Jaipur. From Delhi a taxi roundtrip to Jaipur should cost no more than Rs 3000.
