Animals and Birds in India
There are over 500 species of animals in India. Tigers, elephants and rhinoceros are the most famous animals. Some cats are: panthers, Asiatic lions, leopards, and short-tailed jungle cats.

Rhesus macaques, long-tailed langurs and bonnet macaques are different species of monkeys. Other animals to be seen in India are sloth bears, gaurs (Indian bison), jackals, wild pigs, giant squirrels, buffaloes, hyenas, and mongooses, which are known for killing snakes.

There are many types of deer and antelopes such as blackbuck (Indian antelope), chinkaras (Indian gazelles), nilgais (blue bulls), sambars, chitals (spotted deer), chowsinghas (four-horned antelopes) and barasinghas (swamp deer).

There are over 2,000 species of birds in India, such as eagles, peacocks (the national bird), herons, storks, pelicans, cranes and owls. There are several bird sanctuaries in India, which birds used for breeding and many migrating birds go to yearly.

There are over 500 species of reptiles and amphibians, which includes king cobras, crocodiles, tortoises, pythons and monitor lizards.

National Parks and Sanctuaries
Conservation projects have been set up to protect the valuable species of animals in India. Many of the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries have been established in the former hunting reserves of the Maharajas and the British. Some parks are known for a particular species such as Corbett and Kanha for tigers, Gir for Asian Lions, Periyar for elephants, and Kaziranga for rhinoceros.

There are 70 national parks and over 300 sanctuaries. Many of the parks in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are closed from July to September. Usually the best times to visit the bird sanctuaries are from November to February.

If possible, you should book accommodation and transportation to the parks in advance through the state tourist offices. You should check to see if a permit is necessary, especially if the park is near the border of India. Some parks have modern facilities and other have very basic facilities. Often, travel within the parks is done in vans or jeeps. Also sometimes, a boat or elephant is used to view wildlife. Some parks have watchtowers and hides to give you a good opportunity to view the wildlife. Some of the main national parks and sanctuaries are listed below.

Project Tiger
It is estimated that in the beginning of the century that there were about 40,000 tigers in India. This dwindled over the years to less than 2,000 by 1972, because of hunting and destruction of the forest that they lived in. In 1973, the government, with the help of the World Wildlife Fund, set up Project Tiger.

At first, nine parks were used to protect the tigers. The tiger population, living in the wild, in India is now about 4,000. Now there are 19 Project Tiger sanctuaries. Poaching has always been a problem because there is a demand for almost every part of a tiger’s body. Even its bones are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The parks where you have the best chance to see tigers are Kanha and Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh, Corbett and Dudhwa in Uttar Pradesh, Manas and Kaziranga in Assam, Bandipur in Karnataka and Ranthambhore in Rajasthan.
