There
are three types of tourist offices. The Indian Tourist Development Corporation
(ITDC), State tourist offices, and National tourist offices. Each state
has its own tourist offices. In some cities, the national office is
larger than the state office, if the state office exists at all. I have
usually found the tourist offices in India to be helpful, especially
if questioned properly. But you definitely cannot expect too much from
them.
Many
tourist offices, however, can be downright inefficient and unhelpful.
When you ask for information, they may hand you one brochure, when they
may have ten handouts or brochures on the subject you want to know about,
and then try to get rid of you. The general rule is that you have to
struggle to get every bit of information you want. I guess they are
trying to save money, as I am sure they are very much under-budgeted..
Whatever
information they may give you, they may have ten times more. Be specific.
What about this city? What about this tourist site? If one person won’t
help you, politely try someone else.
The Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) runs bus tours to
different tourist sites, and the tourist offices sell tickets for these
tours. They also operate a chain of hotels that operate under the name
Ashok. Some of these hotels can be a good value for budget travelers,
and others can be very high-class.
State Tourism
departments may also run bus tours and hotels. The state-run hotels
in Tamil Nadu and in many other states are usually a good value.

Overseas Tourist Offices
The Government of India has tourist offices in other countries where
you can get information, brochures, maps, and leaflets about India.
Many times you can get a lot of information from them. For the most
part the overseas tourist offices will be more efficient than the offices
in India.
