bicycle is a good way to get around. You can rent a bike on Chakra Tirtha
Rd for about Rs 20 a day. You and also rent mopeds or 100cc motorcycles
for Rs 200/250 Train Puri has direct train service to and from Calcutta, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati. There are several trains to Bhubaneswar, but the train takes 2 hours and the bus 1½ hr. Tickets can be reserved for all class tickets at the station, or for second-class tickets only, at the city booking office, opposite the police station on Grand Rd. The booking office is open Mon to Sat 8 am to 3 pm. Especially during the pilgrim season, trains should be booked as far in advance as possible. I approached the station manager to obtain a tourist quota ticket, but was referred to the man in charge of ticket reservations. Be prepared for the aggressive taxi and rickshaw drivers outside the station. They will try to get at least three times the normal price. Whatever price you are quoted, offer one-third and you will still be over-paying. The twice weekly Rajdhani Express (Tues, Sat, 5 pm) takes twenty-five hours to go from Delhi to Bhubaneswar. If you are going to or from South India, it is possible to change trains at Bhubaneswar or at Khurda Road junction (44km from Puri), which is south of Bhubaneswar on the Chennai-Calcutta main line. Trains
to places all over India depart from Bhubaneswar. There is a daily train
to Chennai, two trains a week to Bangalore (Wed, Thurs), four a week
to Kochi (Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon) and on Tuesday, the Guwahati-Trivandrum
Exp goes to Thiruvananthapuram. There are five trains a day to Balasore,
near Remuna. There is a daily train to Agra, and three trains a week
to Varanasi. To Calcutta there is the Howrah Puri Exp #8008 (6 pm, 10 hr), Jagannath Express #8410 (9.10 pm, 11 hr), and a few other trains. To
Delhi there is the Neelachal Exp #8475 (9.15 am, 32 hr), Puri-New Delhi
Exp #2815 (9.15 am, 32 hr), Utkal/Kalinga (40 hr), and the Purushottam
Exp (10.30 pm, 32 hr). Going to Puri from Delhi, the Purusottama Exp
is particularly good. It leaves at night, so the trip is two nights
and one day, arriving in the morning. The Utkal/Kalinga Exp passes through
Mathura. To Tirupati there is the Puri-Tirupati Exp #8479 (9.45 am,
33 hr). The Canter minibuses to and from Bhubaneswar are quicker than the larger buses. Minibuses from Bhubaneswar to Puri (1½ hr, Rs 12) leave regularly from the Baramunda (New) bus stand, the Old bus stand, and from next to the petrol station opposite the Ashok Hotel, from 5.30 am to 9.30 pm. The non-stop buses, which stop once or twice, are the quickest. There are regular hourly buses to Konark (1 hr, Rs 10). Shared jeeps from the bus stand also go to Konark more frequently. There is an afternoon bus for Sambalpur (9 hr, Rs 100). Some of the private buses depart from the junction of Grand Rd and Hospital Rd.
