In 1963, after intense fighting by the locals, xe "Nagaland" Nagaland became an independent state from Assam. It is on the border of Myanmar. There are 16 different tribes in this state.
Dzukou Valley, 30km from Kohima, is a good place to trek. As is Mt Saramati, 269km from Kohima. It is difficult to get a permit for this state, because of the political problems here.

Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, is where the Japanese advances into India were stopped in April 1944. There is a well-maintained World War II Cemetery.

There is a good State Museum open daily except Sun 10 am to 4 pm. There is a zoo, open daily except Mon 9 am to 5 pm.

Practicalities
Nagaland Tourism’s Tourist Lodge (22417) has rooms for Rs 125/150.
Valley View, near the bus station, is a clean place with rooms for Rs 200 to Rs 400.
Pine (22234), Phool Bazaar, is a popular place with clean rooms with bath for Rs 400/600.
Japfu Ashok (22721), PR Rd, is the best hotel in town. Rooms with heat are Rs 1000/1400.
Naga Japanese Hotel has a good restaurant that does Chinese and local Naga food.

The closest airport and railway station is in Dimapur (75km), 3½ hours north. There are trains to Guwahati and Calcutta. There is a state bus to Guwahati (14 hr). Blue Hill Travels operates luxury buses to Guwahati.

Dimapur
There are impressive monoliths in xe "Dimapur" Dimapur, which were built before the 13th century. It is on the border of Assam.

The Tourist Lodge (03862 20147) has rooms for Rs 135/160.
Hotel City Tower, Circular Rd, has rooms for Rs 400/500. It has a good restaurant.
Hotel Tragopan, Circular Rd, has rooms with A/C starting at Rs 700/1000.               

There is an airport in Dimapur with flights to Calcutta and Guwahati. Dimapur (4 hr) is connected to Guwahati by rail.
