Bidar
was the capital of the Bahmani dynasty beginning in 1428. Later, it
was the capital of the Barid Shahi kingdom.
This
place is known for producing good bidriwork (elaborate metalwork forming
an intricate pattern on a black background). The shops where they make
and sell bidriwork are on Siddiq Talim Rd. They make plates, cups, bangles,
vases and other items. Some of the work is very expensive.
To
get around, you can rent a bicycle near the Mayura Barid Shahi Hotel.
The Fort
There is a 15th century fort. In some places the walls are 10m high.
The main entrance has three gigantic gates and the remains of a triple
moat. After entering the fort, the Ranjin Mahal is on the left, which
was Mahmud Shah’s palace. Inside is some superb artwork including
excellent carvings around the doors and inlaid mother-of-pearl. If it
is locked, someone in the nearby ASI Museum should have the key. The
museum has a collection of sculptures and weapons (9 am to 1 pm and
2 to 5 pm). Also in the fort is the Solab Khamb Mosque (1327), the ruins
of the Hammam (baths), the Tarkash Mahal Palace, Lal Bagh (Red Garden)
and the Diwan-i-am (Hall of Public Audience).
Tombs
of Bahmani Rulers
The Tombs of Bahmani rulers, located in Ashtur, 3km east of Bidar, include
the impressive tombs of Ahmad Shah I and his son Alauddin Shah I. They
have good tile work and Persian paintings. The nearby tomb of Khalil
Ullah has nice stonework. The tomb of Ahmad Shah I has a dome rising
over 30m high. It is best to come in the morning when the light is best.
Also, it is a good idea to have a flashlight.
Other
Places
The Tombs of the Badri Shahi rulers at the west end
of town are interesting, but are not as impressive as the Bahmani tombs.
Ali Barid’s tomb has a 25m high dome.
Madrassa
of Mahmud Gawan is an ancient theological college dating back to the
15th century. Most of it is in ruins, but the façade is intact,
and there are places where you can see the remains of the excellent
tile work.
Guru
Nanak Jhira (228274), across from Krishna Regancy, is an ancient
Sikh Gurdwara Temple.
Where to Stay and
Eat
KSTDC Hotel Mayura Barid Shahi (26571), Udgir Rd, has
rooms with bath for Rs 150/200. It is not such a good place.
Hotel Ashoka (26249), near Deepak Cinema, has nice
rooms for Rs 160, deluxe rooms for Rs 275, and with A/c for Rs 500.
It is a good value. Recommended.
Bidar International, 1km from the bus stand, has rooms
with bath for Rs 250/300 and Rs 350/400 for a better room.
Kailash (227727), near the bus stand, is a decent place
with clean rooms with hot water in the morning for 165/185. Well-maanged.
Udupi Krishna is a popular vegetarian place with inexpensive,
unlimited thalis.
Hotel Mayura Restaurant, opposite the bus stand, is
a good place.
The outdoor restaurant next to the Hotel Mayura Barid Shahi,
is good.
Travel
There are buses to Hyderabad (4 hr), Gulbarga (3½ hr), Bangalore,
and Bijapur (8½ hr). New bus stand (228508).
From Gulbarga you can get fast-trains to Mumbai and Bangalore.
