Bangalore Hotels It is difficult to get a room in the Mahatma Gandhi Rd (MG Rd) area without a reservation. The rooms in the MG Rd area are generally good and in the middle of all the action. There are many cheap impersonal hotels near the railway and bus stations, but it is not nearly as nice a place to stay as the MG Rd area. There are also many hotels along Subahdar Chatram Rd (SC Rd), about a five-minute walk from the railway station. Where to Stay—Lower Rainbow Hotel (670-2235), Sri Narasimharaja Rd, by City Market bus stand, has rooms for Rs 150/250 and A/C rooms for Rs 350. It is one of the best values in town. Hotel Amar, 5-6 Ayurvedic Hospital Rd, is a good value with rooms with attached bath. Hotel Prashanth, 21 E Tank Bund Rd, is a popular place with rooms that are a good value. YWCA (223-8574), 40 Mission Rd, has rooms with bath for Rs 450/550. They accept both men and women. There are Retiring Rooms at the City railway station for Rs 350 and Rs 450 with A/C. A dorm bed is Rs 125. Where to Stay—Bus Station Area The cheaper hotels are around the bus station, south of the railway station. Janata Lodge is a good, clean place that has rooms with bath for Rs 125/150. Hotel Tourist (226-2381), 5 Racecourse Rd, is a good place that has rooms with bath and hot water in the morning for Rs 150/300. Royal Lodge (226-6575), 251 Subedar Chatram Rd, has clean rooms with common bath for Rs 200/250 and rooms with bath and hot water in the morning for Rs 400. 24-hour checkout. Hotel Adora (287-2280), 47 Subedar Chatram Rd, has decent rooms with hot water in the morning for Rs 275/400. Has an excellent inexpensive vegetarian restaurant. The popular Ramakrishna Lodge (226-3041), Subedar Chatram Rd, is a good, clean place with rooms for Rs 200/250. The KSTDC Hotel Mayura Kempe Gowda, Dhanavanthri Rd, has rooms with bath that are a good value for Rs 350/400. Janardhana Hotel (225-4444), Kumara Krupa Rd, has large rooms with a balcony, bath, and hot water for Rs 400/500 and deluxe rooms for Rs 275. 24-hour checkout. Hotel Mahaveer (287-3670, fax 287-0735), 9 Tank Bund Rd, opposite the bus station, is a modern, clean place with rooms for Rs 250/350 and Rs 600 for A/C. The cheaper rooms in the front of the building can be noisy. The more spacious deluxe rooms in the back are quiet and a good value. 24-hour checkout. Where to Stay—MG Rd Area Hotels in this area fill up early. I went to five hotels in this area in the morning before I found a place with a vacancy. Sunflower Lodge, 129 Brigade Rd, has rooms for Rs 400. Hotel Gautam (558-8366; fax 555-9889), 17 Museum Rd, has clean good-size rooms with bath for Rs 650/750. Quiet. The popular Brindavan Hotel (558-4000), 108 MG Rd, has rooms with bath for Rs 450/600 and A/C rooms for Rs 650/1050. It is a good value and recommended, but is almost always full. Book in advance. New Central Lodge (559-2395), 56 Infantry Rd, has clean rooms with common bath for Rs 200/350 and Rs 350/400 with bath. It has hot water between 6 and 9 am. It doesn’t look good, but is all right for the center of Bangalore. If all the lower-priced places in the MG Road area are full, there is a good chance this place will still have rooms. The rooms by the street are noisy. Hotel Vellara (556-5684), 283 Brigade Rd, 1km from MG Road, is centrally located and is a good value. Imperial Lodge (558-5473), 95 Residency Rd, has rooms with bath for Rs 300/400. It can be noisy. Airlines Hotel (227-3783; fax 221-8776), 4 Chennai Bank Rd, has rooms for Rs 500/650 and Rs 1000 with A/C. Hot water in the morning. It is a good place that has to be booked two weeks in advance. Back from the road and has a garden. Berrys Hotel (558-7211), 46/1 Church St., has rooms for Rs 750/850 and Rs 850/950 with A/C. It is a large, well-managed place with decent rooms. Where to Stay— Middle Woodlands Hotel (222-5111; fax 223-6963), 5 Sampangi Tank Rd (Raja Rammohan Roy Rd), is a recommended place in a quiet area with nice gardens. It has two excellent vegetarian restaurants, one South Indian and the other Continental. Rooms are Rs 600/950 and Rs 1100 with A/C. There are also more expensive suites. It is a good value. It has an old and a new building. Ashraya International (261-921), 149 Infancy Rd, has rooms for Rs 700/900. Hotel Nilgiri’s Nest (558-8401; fax 558-2853; Email: nilgirisnest@vsnl.net), 171 Brigade Rd, has clean, comfortable rooms with TV for Rs 1000/1400 and rooms with A/C for Rs 1400/1700. It is centrally located and is a good value. 24-hour checkout. The new Hotel Highgate (559-7172; fax 559-7799), centrally located at 33 Church St by MG Rd, is a modern place with central A/C rooms for Rs 1400/1800. It is a good value. Hotel Raceview (220-3401), 25 Race Course Rd, close to the railway station, has rooms with hot water for Rs 700 and Rs 1000 with A/C. The three-star Hotel Abhishek (226-2713), 19/2 Kumara Krupa Rd, High Grounds, has rooms for Rs 850/950 and Rs 1000/1100 with A/C. It has two vegetarian restaurants.
