In the 16th and 17th centuries, Surat was an important
port and one of the richest cities in India. It is now a major industrial
city. There is nothing to see or do in Surat.

(244-2339), near the railway station, has singles with common bath for
Rs 175 and doubles for Rs 300.
Omkar, 8th floor (741-9329), Omkar Chambers, has rooms
with common bath for Rs 200 and with bath for Rs 300. Some rooms have
a TV.
Rupali Guest House (742-3874), near the railway station,
has basic rooms with common bath for Rs 200 and Rs 350 for a double
with bath. Dorm beds are Rs 80.
Sarvajanik Hotel (742-6159), opposite the railway station,
has clean rooms with bath for Rs 400/500. Hot water in the evening.
Recommended.
Where to Stay—Middle
and High
Hotel Yuvraj (741-3001;
fax 742-7440), near the railway station, has A/C rooms for Rs 1000/1150.
The quality of the rooms vary, so ask to see a few. It has a vegetarian
restaurant.
Hotel Central Excellency (242-5325; fax 244-1271),
near the railway station, has rooms with bath for Rs 700/850 and Rs
900/1400 with A/C. Well priced and efficient.
Embassy Hotel (744-3170; fax 744-3173), near the railway
station, has rooms with bath for Rs 1100/1200. This is a good choice
in this price level.
Hotel Rama Regency (766-6565; fax 766-7294), near Bharati
Park, 5km from the center of the city, has modern A/C rooms for Rs 3200/4200.
It has a pool and a health club.
Holiday Inn (766-6565; fax 766-7294), Bharati Park,
Athwa Lines, 6km from city center in a quiet neighborhood, has luxury
rooms and good facilities, including a pool.
Where to Eat
Gaurav Restaurant,
near the railway station, serves South Indian food.
Hotel Rama Regency has a coffee shop which serves a
buffet dinner for Rs 200.
Mossam, Hotel Yuvraj, opposite the railway station,
is a higher-class place with good Gujarati and South Indian food. Medium
priced.
Tex Palazzo is a revolving restaurant with good thalis.
Health Food Restaurant is a good place.
Travel
Surat is
on the main line going between Mumbai (4½ hr to 6½ hr)
and Ahmedabad (3½ hr to 5 hr).
