Porbandar is on the seashore between Dwarka and Somnath. It is said
to have been the home of Sudama Brahman, who studied with Krishna in
the Ashram of Sandipani Muni. Porbandar used to be called Sudama Puri,
and there is a Sudama Temple in the center of town.
This place is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar is a hassle-free
place that does not see many foreign tourists.

You can change money at the State Bank of India, MG
Rd` (opposite Hotel Flamingo); and the Bank of Baroda,
MG Rd, under the Hotel Flamingo. Divyaraj Foreign Exchange,
Limdarchowk, near the Jynbeeli Bridge and Thankys Tors
can also change money.
Cyber Hut, Indraprasth Hotel offers Internet
accesss for Rs 30 per hour. Slyline Cyber Cafe (225-3063), Hotel Indraprasth
Complex, does Internet for Rs 30
Kirti Mandir
The house where Mahatma Gandhi was born in October
1869, is a popular tourist spot in the middle of town. Gandhi’s
family left the house in 1881. There is a swastika in the house marking
his birth spot. There is a photo exhibit and a small bookshop in the
building next door.
Where to Stay
Rajkamal Guest House
(224-2674), MG Rd, has basic rooms with bath for Rs 75/100.
Nilam Guest House (224-4503), has basic rooms for Rs
200 (bucket hot water). Many of the rooms don’t have external
windows.
Toran Tourist Bungalow (224-5476, 224-1821) Chowpatty,
has a good location by the sea. The large, clean rooms are Rs 250 and
Rs 400 with A/C. Good dorm beds are Rs 60. Some of the rooms can be
a bit run-down.
New Oceanic Hotel (224-2217; fax same), Chowpatty,
next to the beach, is a small modern place with rooms for Rs 600 and
Rs 800 with A/C.
Shree Kandhlikrupa Guest House (224-6655), near the
railway station, has good rooms with bath for Rs 200/300 and Rs 500
with A/C. The sign is in Gujarati.
Sheetal Hotel, ( 224-834, 224-7596; fax: 224-1540,1)
opposite the GPO, has rooms with hot water for Rs 400 and Rs 650 with
A/C. Many of the rooms do not have windows, so it is best to see a few
rooms before selecting one. Some of the rooms are quite good for what
you pay. Have a restaurant
Moon (224-1172), ST Rd, has clean rooms for Rs 400/450
and Rs 700/800 with A/C.
Hotel Flamingo (224-7123), MG Rd, is a clean place
with a good manager. It is a decent value with clean rooms with bath
for Rs 200 and Rs 450 for a fancy A/C room. Some rooms don’t have
windows.
Vaibhav Guest House (224-7000), MG Rd, has rooms for
Rs 275/350 and Rs 650/700 with A/C. The sign is in Gujarati.
Kuber (224-7172), off ST Rd, is the best place in town.
Where to Eat
Aadarsh Restaurant,
MG Rd, is a good, inexpensive vegetarian place. Recommended.
Swagat, MG Rd, is a popular place with very good Punjabi
and South Indian vegetarian food. It is the best place in town.
Hotel Flamingo, MG Rd, has a good A/C restaurant serving
South Indian, Chinese, and Punjabi cuisine (Rs 50 main dish).
Travel
Air The
airport is 5 km from town.By auto-rickshaw it costs Rs 50 to go the
4km to the airport.
Jet Airways has flights six days a week to Mumbai (Rs
5000).
Thanky’s Tours (224-4344; Web Site: http://www.thankys.com),
MG Rd, near the main square) books International and domestic flights.
Train
The Saurashtra Express #9216 (8 pm, 25 hr) goes to Mumbai via Rajkot
(4½ hr), Ahmedabad (10 hr), and Vadodara (14 hr). A morning local
train goes to Rajkot and Jamnagar.
Bus
The long distance bus stand is about a fifteen-minute walk from MG Rd.
There are regular buses to Dwarka (2 hr), Veraval (3 hr), Junagadh (2
hr), Diu (5 hr), and Rajkot (3½ hr).
