Jamnagar, founded in the 16th century, is built around the Ranmal Lake. There are a few impressive buildings here.

Information
The railway station and State bus stand are several km from each other. The railway station is 4km from the center of the city. In the middle of the city is Ranmal Lake.

You can change money at the Corporation Bank, near Bedi Gate, and at the State Bank of India, New Super Market.

Save Time Travels (71739), near Bedi Gate, is a good travel agency for booking flights.

Lakhota Palace
Lakhota Palace, in the middle of Ranmal Lake and connected by a causeway, is the old palace of the Maharaja of Nawanagar. When you enter the palace, you pass the guard room complete with swords and muskets. Inside the palace is a museum (open daily except Wed and the 2nd and 4th Sat of the month from 10:30 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5:30 pm).

Jain Temples
There are two outstanding Jain temple located southwest of Bedi Gate, in the middle of town, which have some excellent murals depicting pastimes of Jain saints. The Shantinath Mandir and Adinath Mandir have intricate carvings and are worth seeing.

Other Places
At the Bala Hanuman Temple, on the east side of Ranmal Lake, there has been 24-hour chanting since August 1, 1964. Devotees chant “Shri Ram Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram.” This temple was mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records.

South of the Lake is Bhujia Fort (open daily 9 am to 1 pm and 5 to 7 pm).

Cremation Park, a ten-minute ride from the city center, is an interesting place with scenes from the Ramayana and other deities.

Where to Stay
Dreamland Guest House (255-7598), Teen Batti Chowk, has rooms for Rs 300/400 and with A/C for Rs 550/700. It is fairly quiet.
Hotel Ashiana (255-9110: fax: 255-1155), upstairs in the New Super Market, has rooms with TV and hot water for Rs 400 to Rs 750/850. It has a good vegetarian restaurant and is often booked.
Hotel Punit, Nehru Marg, Teen Batti Chowk, has rooms for Rs 400/450 and Rs 900/1000 with A/C. The rooms near the road are noisy and are therefore best avoided.
Hotel Aarti (255-0528), 3rd floor of a building opposite the bus stand, has clean, comfortable rooms with bath for Rs 425/450 and Rs 900/1000 with A/C. It has a restaurant.
Janki (267-1245), 3rd floor, Anjaria Chamber, KV Rd, near Bedi Gate, has clean, large rooms with TV and hot water for Rs 400/500 and Rs 600/700 with A/C.

Aram (551-701; fax 554-957), is a stately old building with rooms with antique furniture for Rs 1000.

Where to Eat
Madras Hotel serves South Indian and Punjabi dishes.
Kalpana, Teen Batti, has economical vegetarian South Indian and Punjabi dishes, and ice cream. Closed Mon.
Hotel Swati is a good vegetarian place serving Punjabi and South Indian food.
Rangoli, between New Super Market and Teen Batti, is a higher-class restaurant serving Punjabi and South Indian food. Recommended.
Amiras, Hotel Ashiana, New Super Market, is a very good vegetarian restaurant serving Gujarati, South Indian, and North Indian food. A good value.
Seven Seas, Hotel President, is an A/C place with good Indian, Continental, and Chinese. Reasonably priced.

Travel
Air
Indian Airlines (550-211), Bhid Bhanjan Rd, has flights to Mumbai ($40). An auto-rickshaw to the airport (1km west) costs about Rs 40.

Train The new railway station is about 4km northwest of the city center (Rs 20 by auto-rickshaw). There are trains to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot going east, and to Dwarka going west. The express train to Dwarka takes three hours, and the passenger train takes at least 5½ hard hours.

Bus There are state buses to Porbandar, Rajkot (every half-hour), Bhuj, Dwarka, Ahmedabad, and Junagadh. If you are arriving by bus, you may want to get off in the middle of the town near Bedi Gate where some of the hotels are located.
Private companies organize buses to Mumbai and to places all over the state.
