Vagator

Vagator, like Anjuna, is a relaxed, fairly undeveloped place. It has an excellent, hassle-free, mood. If you want to have a good time on the beach and want to party to the max, this is definitely the place to go. It is a really nice place, but if you consider yourself conservative, it is probably better to go to another beach.

Located here is Big Vagator beach to the north, a fairly long, wide, white-sand beach. Not many foreign tourists go to this beach, and in the afternoon Indian tourists invade it. Little Vagator beach (also called Ozran or Little Israel) is to the south. To get to this beach, you have to walk about a minute down a steep cliff. It is actually two beaches divided by a headway (rocks going out into the sea). The more northern beach of the two is smaller and more crowded. The south beach is fairly spread out and more secluded. It is a beautiful beach. This beach is mainly used by the young, hip, budget crowd with time on their hands who are in no hurry to go anywhere. Topless bathing is the norm on this beach, and no one seems to care.

Vagator consists of about ten hotels, twenty restaurants, and shops spread out over a few km. There are some houses (much less than the actual demand) here rented out to long-staying travelers. It can be difficult to find a place to stay, and if you come during the high-season, you will probably have to stay in Calangute or Baga for a few days while you wait for a vacancy.

Information
You can change money at the Corporation Bank, 250m south of the main crossroads on the road to Anjuna. You can change money quickly at the bank rate at the Primrose Cafe during the day.

You can make calls and receive a callback for Rs 5 a minute at Vagator Communication Centre (227-3335), on the main road leading to Big Vagator Beach, near the turn off to Primrose. Internet at Lalita Communications and Bethany Inn (Rs 50 per hour).

You should have a flashlight (torch) to get around, as there are no streetlights.

If you want to rent a motorbike, expect people to drive up to you and try to rent you thexe "Vagator" motorbike that they are riding. You can rent a motorbike from Roseland Auto Centre, 100m down the road from Primrose. On the main road there is another place, next to Vagator Communication Centre. You can rent a motorcycle at Prakash Auto Service (263-214), near the Sea Green Chinese Restaurant. You could also go to the repair shop in Anjuna (see map), which has a good selection of mopeds and motorcycles.

Where to Stay
It is hard to find a room during the high season, and you may have to settle for whatever you can get until a vacancy opens up. Many people rent houses for longer stays. Rent is usually from Rs 2000 to Rs 5000 a month, depending on the time of year and how long you plan to stay. If you want to rent a house only during the Christmas season, you may pay more than double these prices—if you can find anything to rent at all. Ask at the restaurants (especially the Royal Velvet or Primrose) for rooms or houses to rent. If you plan to stay awhile, it is best to arrive in late September or October to begin the search. Many houses are rented to the same people year after year.

Jolly Jolly Lester(227-3620), Vagator Beach Rd, onthe main road going to Big Vagator beach has six nice rooms with attached bathrooms for Rs 500 and double that during Christmas. Has a nice garden.
Dolrina Guest House,(227-3382, 227-4896, Email: dolrina@hotmail.com), near the beach, down a path 50m from the road, is the largest guest house in Vagator. It is a friendly, family-run place with rooms with common bath for Rs 250/400, with attached bath for Rs 500, and a triple for Rs 700. It has safe deposit and is quiet.
Anita Lodge (227-4348), nearby, has five basic rooms with Western toilets and small balconies for Rs 300. You rent the rooms at the Anita Wine Shop across the road.
Yellow House, near the parking lot for the beach, has rooms for Rs 300.
Moonlight Bar has rooms with common bath for Rs 300.
Oasis Guest House, west of the crossroads, has rooms with attached bath for Rs 450. Trees surround it.
Reshma Guest House has rooms with common bath for Rs 300/350 and Rs 500 with bath.
Motel Hill Top, about a half km back from Little Vagator Beach, has good rooms for Rs 350 a night. This place is usually fully booked well in advance in December and January. It has an Italian bakery and a restaurant.
Balbina’s has rooms with common bath for Rs 400.
The extremely poorly maintained Royal Resort (227-4365) charges an unbelievably overpriced Rs 1400 for a double in the high-season and Rs 800 the rest of the year.
Le Bluebird (227-3695) has nice rooms for Rs 300 to Rs 500.
Bethany Inn Guest House (227-4520: Email: bethany@goatelecom.com) is a new place with clean rooms with bath, hot water and a fridge for Rs 600. Also has an Internet cafe.
Well-managed. Some rooms have balconies.
Leoney Resorts (227-3357, 227-3634; Email: romi@goatelecom.com) has good comfortable rooms for Rs 900 and bigger rooms for Rs 1300. It is a nice place in a quiet area. Foreign exchange. Has cottages built around a pool.
Sterling Vagator Beach Resort (227-3277), near Big Vagator Beach, is a resort hotel with a big pool, lawns, a palm grove, and two restaurants. During the high-season ordinary cottages are Rs 3200 (Rs 1800 at other times). A/C cottages are Rs 4000 (Rs 3000 at other times). It is a pleasant secluded place to stay. Some married friends of mine who just stayed here really enjoyed it.

Where to Eat and Entertainment
Primrose Cafe and Restaurant, south edge of the village on the road to Anjuna, is the most popular place for late-night action.
Loot Discotheque, at the Alcove Restaurant, above Little Vagator Beach, is a nightspot.
Jolly Jolly Jester, between Big Vagator beach and the main crossroads, has good Western, vegetarian food, and salads.
Sea Green has good Chinese food at a good price.
Mango Tree has good Chinese food.
Lobo’s, behind the beach, is one of the best beach places. It serves typical Goan food, and Western and vegetarian preparations.
Salt and Pepper is a popular place.
Potala is a popular, reasonably-priced Tibetan restaurant.
There is a good Israeli restaurant on the road to Anjuna from Little Vagator Beach, across from Milky Place.

Travel
To get here from Panaji (30 min to Mapusa), you must first take a bus to Mapusa (9km east, 20 min, every 15 min). The bus stand for buses to Mapusa is on the main road about a km from the beach. To get here from Calangute or Baga, it is best to take a taxi (Rs 125) or a motorcycle taxi (Rs 75) as there is no direct bus.
