The hotels in Delhi
are more expensive than almost anywhere else in India. Most budget hotels
are either in the Connaught Place area or Paharganj, near the New Delhi
Railway Station. There are hotels in all price ranges near Connaught
Place. The Paharganj area can be noisy and crowded, but many people
find it an interesting place. There is a 10% luxury tax for hotel rooms
costing more than Rs 500.
If this is your
first time to India and you are arriving late at night (most flights
arrive at such times), it is a good idea to reserve a room before your
arrival. The better hotels in Delhi fill up early in the day, and it
is difficult to find a decent room late at night. There is a tourist
counter at the airport at which room can be reserved; hotels keep them
informed of vacancies. Some of the airport taxi drivers are capable
of telling you anything to get your money. Please read the warning on
this subject.
You can leave luggage
for safekeeping at certain hotels, such as the Hare Rama Guest House
and the Anoop Hotel in Paharganj.
Where to Stay—Paharganj
Lower
Coming out of the railway station, directly across the street to the
left is a road which goes for about 1km and which is known as the Main
Bazaar. There are a good amount of cheap hotels along this road, and
it is the favorite place to stay for budget travelers. Despite the large
number of hotels in the Main Bazaar, often many of them will be full
late at night. The rooms facing the Main Bazaar can be noisy, but the
bazaar closes around 11 pm and is quiet until 7 am.
Hotel Kanishta (525-365) has an assortment of rooms.
The air-cooled rooms with bath and TV are Rs 225/275. The rooms with
balconies are better. Because of its location, it can be noisy.
Traveler Guest House Inn (354-4849), 4360 Main Bazaar,
has clean double rooms with a bath for Rs 225. A triple room with a
TV and bath with hot water is Rs 275. Some rooms don’t have windows.
Royal Guest House (753-5880), 4465 Main Bazaar, has
clean rooms with common bath for Rs 175 and with bath for Rs 250.
One of the first hotels you will see when leaving the train station
is the Kiran Hotel (752-6104), which has rooms for
Rs 175 with common bath, Rs 200 with private bath, or a room on the
5th floor for Rs 105 with common bath. Next door is the Kailash
Guest House (777-4993), 4469 Main Bazaar, which has rooms for
Rs 250 with attached bath and rooms with common bath for Rs 125/175.
Both of these places are decent.
The Hotel Bright (752-5852), No. 1089-90, is inexpensive,
with rooms for Rs 90/120 with common bath and Rs 140/160 with bath.
It is a good value and is often full.
Hotel Down Town (355-5815; fax 752-0033), 4583 Main
Bazaar, down a quiet side street to the left, just before the Hotel
Bright, has clean rooms with common bath for Rs 170/190 and a room with
bath for Rs 185/225. It is a good place.
Next door is the Hotel Star Palace (2368-1597; fax:
2355-4330; Email: starview@vsnl.com), which is also good. It has clean
rooms with bath with hot water and TV for Rs 475/550. The rooms are
a good value. Recommended.
Hotel Namaskar (752-1234, 752-2233), 917 Chandiwalan,
Main Bazaar, is located down a side alley. If you are coming from the
New Delhi train station, you go about 30m past the Hotel Bright, then
make a right at the alley (past the urinals). Rooms are Rs 225/275,
and there are rooms with three beds for Rs 350. There are a few A/C
rooms for Rs 450. For the Paharganj area, it is a nice place, run by
two brothers who are extremely friendly and helpful. This hotel is off
from the main road and is therefore quiet. Recommended. Book in advance
if possible. The owners can also arrange inexpensive bus tickets.
Camran Lodge (352-6053; fax 777-9906), 1116 Main Bazaar,
has basic rooms with common bath for 130/160, with bath, Rs 225. It
was once a mosque, so the architecture is interesting. Bucket hot water.
Hotel Navrang (753-1922), 6 Tooti Chowk, is down a
side street, to the right, off the vegetable market. It has rooms with
common bath for Rs 100/120 and Rs 100/145 with bath. It is a popular,
friendly place, and is often full of travelers.
Mohit Guest House (354-1743), nearby, has basic rooms
for Rs 150/175.
Hotel Payal (520-867), 1182 Main Bazaar, has rooms
with common bath for Rs 160/225 and a room with bath for Rs 200/250.
The popular Vivek (351-2900), 1534-50 Main Bazaar,
about a ten-minute walk from the railway station, has rooms with common
bath for Rs 170/225, Rs 200/380 with attached bath, and Rs 500/600 for
a deluxe room with A/C. Some rooms have color TV, and most of the rooms
have bath. Some rooms do not have windows, so it is best to ask to see
a few rooms. It has a 24-hour rooftop restaurant.
Hotel Vishal (753-2079), 1600 Main Bazaar, has clean
rooms with bath for Rs 170/220 and dorm beds for less. It has a roof
garden and is considered one of the best hotels in the area.
Next door the Anoop Hotel (352-1467; fax: 753-2942;
email: send@ndf.vsnl.net.in), 1566 Main Bazaar, is one of the better
places. The rooms are of different qualities, so ask to see a few rooms.
Some rooms have windows and others do not. It has a popular rooftop
terrace and restaurant. Rooms are Rs 190/260 to Rs 350/450 for an A/C
room. Recommended. You can receive call-back phone calls here. 24-hour
checkout.
Nearby is the Hare Krishna Guest House (753-3017),
1572 Main Bazaar, which has clean rooms for Rs 170/200. The last four
hotels are all popular with young foreigners.
Ajay Guest House ((351-6762; fax: 354-9855; email:
ajay5084@hotmail.com, sent@ndf.vsnl.net.in), 5084 Main Bazaar, down
a side street to the left, is a popular place. Clean rooms with bathrooms
with hot water are Rs 170/220. A triple room is Rs 260 and a room with
A/C is Rs 360. There is a German bakery in the lobby which sells good
baked goods and pizza. The lobby is always crowded with travelers and
is therefore a great place to meet people. Many travelers who stay here
find this place interesting, but others find it too active. Some rooms
have windows opening to the hall rather than to the outside. First floor
rooms can be noisy due to the crowds congregating in the lobby. You
can receive call-back phone calls here. It has two large pool tables
on the ground floor. 24-hour checkout.
Next door is the Ankur Guest House (753-3017), which
has rooms with common bath for Rs 140 and Rs 170/220 with bath. It is
popular with travelers.
Hare Rama Guest House (743-3017; fax 753-2795), 298
Main Bazaar, down the side road near the Khanna Cinema, opposite the
Ajay, has good rooms for Rs 170/230, with three beds for Rs 260, and
Rs 400 with A/C. It is a popular place with travelers, especially with
Israelis. It has an assortment of rooms, some without windows, so see
a few rooms first. The rooms on the top floor in the back are good.
Sometimes this place can be noisy. The rooftop restaurant is open twenty-four
hours a day and is a good place to meet people. The travel agent here,
Aa Bee Travels, is recommended. 24-hour checkout. Many people will consider
this place too busy.
Hotel Satyam (524-066) has clean rooms with bath for
Rs 200/250.
Hotel Star View (355-6300), 5136 Main Bazaar, has rooms
with bath and a TV ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 1000.
Hotel SR Palace (355-7066; 355-4498), 598 Gali Kaitwali
(Behind Sai Baba Mandir), Bazaar Sangatrashan, has good, clean, new
rooms with common bath for Rs 250/300 and a double with air-cooling
for Rs 350/400.
Metropolis (753-1794; fax 752-5600), 1634 Main Bazaar,
has clean rooms with hot water for Rs 400 (Rs 800 with A/C). The restaurant
here is one of the best in Paharganj, and this hotel is considered one
of the best and most comfortable in the Main Bazaar.
Hotel Amar (354-4849), west end of Main Bazaar, has
rooms with common bath for Rs 170/270, rooms with bath, a TV, air-cooling
for Rs 300/400 and Rs 550/650 with A/C.
Hotel Chanakya (751-8823), Rajguru Rd, has rooms with

of New Delhi railway station, has rooms with bath for Rs 300/400. Dorm
beds are Rs 100. You must have a train ticket to stay here. It is a
bit institutionalized.
Where to Stay—Connaught

Singh Building, Janpath Lane, has simple rooms with common bath for
Rs 180/325. Dorm beds are Rs 100. It is clean, and in a quiet area.

the Indian Tourist Office, has tiny rooms for Rs 175/270 with common

“left-luggage” facility for Rs 7 a day.
Sunny Guest House (331-2909), 152 Scindia House, by
Janpath and the Indian Tourist Office, has rooms for the same price
as the Ringo Guest House. Both of these places are popular with backpackers
and have a good atmosphere, but the single rooms really are small. Both
these places are owned and managed by the same people, and they are
friendly and trustworthy.

Where to Stay—Other
Lower
International Youth Centre (Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, 2611
6285), Nyaya Marg, by Chanakyapuri area, has good rooms for Rs 750.
It is located about twenty minutes by car from Connaught Place, just
behind the Chinese Embassy. The rooms are good and there are also dorm
beds for Rs 70.
New Delhi Tourist Camp (327-2898; fax 336-1847), J
Nehru Marg, by Jai Prakash Hospital and Delhi Gate, has been closed.
The only place that I know of to stay in a vehicle is Qudsia
Gardens Tourist Camp (252-3121), across from the Interstate
bus station, which has rooms for Rs 125/250 and a deluxe room for Rs
300. You can park here for Rs 100 per vehicle. I am been told that this
place is very noisy because it is right next to the bus station. Also
I was told that the bathrooms are some of the dirtiness in India (that
is saying a lot). You can camp here for Rs 50 per person.
There are Retiring Rooms at both the New Delhi and
Old Delhi train stations. The Old Delhi station has rooms for Rs 250
and Rs 60 for a dorm bed. New Delhi has regular rooms for Rs 250/350
and A/C rooms for Rs 450/600. Both places are noisy, so it can be difficult
to sleep.
There are also retiring rooms and dorms at both the
Domestic Terminal (329-5126) and the International
Terminal (545-2011). To stay in the private retiring rooms,
you are supposed to be a transit passenger and must present a ticket
to prove both your arrival and your departure. They may allow you to
stay if you have a confirmed departure within twenty-four hours and
are not in transit. The Domestic Terminal has rooms
for Rs 350 and Rs 500 with A/C. Dorm beds cost Rs 125. The International
Terminal has rooms for Rs 400/500 and dorm beds for Rs 125.
Many times the rooms are full, but you can often get a dorm bed. The
dorms at the International Terminal are outside the terminal, across
the parking lot. Some dorms have six beds in them, so if you wish a
private room, you can rent all six beds. Rooms are booked at the airport
manager’s office.

There are many hotels on Arakashan Road, two blocks from the New Delhi
railway stations. Most of these hotels are good and are used by travelers
and Indian businessmen. Many of the other hotels on the street are as
good as the ones mentioned here, so you will have no problem finding
a good room. For the same room you get here for Rs 400, you would have
to pay Rs 800 in Connaught Place, just a five-minute auto-rickshaw ride
away.
Hotel Ajanta (752-0925; fax 752-0229), 36 Arakashan
Rd, is a popular place. Economy rooms are Rs 300/400, standard rooms

with A/C and hot water, and Rs 300 for a dorm bed. There is a 5% service

impersonal, but for the price it is sufficient for most middle-class
