Where
to Eat—Connaught Place
Cheap The popular Sona Rupa, 40 Janpath,
near Connaught Place, is an economical South Indian fast-food type restaurant.
It also sells Chinese and North Indian food. It has Baskin Robbins ice
cream.
Shudh, in the Regal Building at Connaught Place, has
a thali for about half the price of most nearby places.
Mahavir Sweets, 26/2 Inner Circle, E-Block, has vegetarian
thalis for Rs 20 and special thalis for Rs 30. It also has good milk
sweets.
Nirula’s, L-Block, has the popular Pot Pourri
restaurant upstairs, which has a good-value, all-you-can-eat salad bar
for Rs 105 (sometimes excellent), pizza, sandwiches and many other items.
Recommended. Also upstairs is the Chinese Room, which
has Chinese food for around Rs 200 a meal. Downstairs is an ice cream
place with over 50 flavors, open 10 am to midnight. They also have a
branch on N-Block and at several other places in Delhi.
Wimpy, N-Block, has veggie-burgers, fries, shakes,
and non-veg items. It is part of the British fast-food chain.
Ruby Tuesday (332-3627), at the Outer Circle of M-48
Connaught Place, just opened up. It has a good selection of vegetarian
items, including some really good authentic Super Nachos, quesadilla
with cheese, and pizza.
There is a T.G.I. Friday (371-1991) at Connaught Place,
on F-Block-16, Inner Circle.
Keventers, a milk bar, located at the corner of A-Block
and the inner circle, next to B-Block, is frequented by many people
I know who like to eat well. They serve excellent milk shakes.
Domino’s Pizza (373-6880) at M-42, M-Block, Connaught
Circus, Opp Super Bazaar Market, has excellent take-out pizzas. They
deliver between 11 am and 11 pm to the hotels in Paharganj. A large
cheese pizza is Rs 135. Recommended.
Pizza Hut, E-Block, part of the American chain, is
a good place to eat. They serve good pizzas, pastas, soups, and have
a salad bar. During lunch and dinner you will usually have to wait about
twenty minutes for a table. A meal here will cost about Rs 150 a person.
Pizza Express, D-Block, part of the English chain,
serves good pizzas. It is more expensive than Pizza Hut and not as popular.
Don’t Pass Me By, 79 Scindia House, near the
Ringo and Sunny guest houses, is popular, with good breakfasts. It has
Chinese food and fresh juices.
Wenger’s, 16 A-Block, Connaught Circus, sells
good cakes, rolls, sandwiches, and breads. A good value.
Cafe 100, B-Block, serves pizzas, Indian snacks, and
ice cream. It has a good buffet upstairs from noon to 3 pm and 7 to
11 pm. Busy at lunchtime.
More Expensive The Vega,
in the Alka Hotel across the street from G-Block, Connaught Place, is
a very good pure vegetarian place. The food here does not contain onions
or garlic. It has a good all-you-can-eat thali for Rs 150. The veg-sizzler
is excellent. Recommended.
Rodeo, 12 A-Block, has good Mexican, Italian, and Indian
food. A main dish goes for about Rs 150. The waiters dress up like cowboys.
Zen Restaurant, B-Block, has good Japanese and Chinese
food. It is a high-class place. Full meals are noon to 3 pm and 7 to
11.30 pm.
Parikrama is a revolving restaurant on top of a high
building on Kasturba Gandhi Marg. The views are excellent and the food
is also good. Main dishes cost about Rs 200. Full meals are served from
noon to 3 pm and 7 to 10.30 pm.
The popular Kwality Restaurant, Sansad Marg,
is a good place serving both Indian and Western food. Main dishes cost
about Rs 100.
United Coffee House, E-Block, is a popular place with
good service and food.
The popular Host, F-Block, is a good Indian, Western,
and Chinese restaurant.
Fa Yian, A-Block, Middle Circle, serves good Chinese
food (managed by Chinese people). A meal costs around Rs 100.
Gaylord is a well-decorated place with chandeliers
and good food. Main dishes cost about Rs 200.
Embassy Restaurant, D-Block, is a fancy-looking, popular, good place.
Amber, 19 N-Block, Connaught Circus, serves Indian,
Chinese, and Continental. It has good, lightly spiced Mughlai food.
It is fairly expensive.
Where to Eat—Bengali Market
Nathus, at Bengali Market, has good vegetarian fast-foods
and sweets. It is located about a five-minute auto-rickshaw ride from
Connaught Place. Ask to go to Bengali Market and you can’t miss
it.
Bengali Sweet Shop, Bengali Market, has fast-foods
and Bengali sweets.
Paharganj
German Bakery, in the lobby of the Ajay Guest House,
has good sandwiches, pizza, and baked goods.
Falafel Restaurant, down a side street near the Anoop
Hotel, has good Israeli food.
Metropolis Restaurant, in the hotel of the same name,
is a good place. They serve Indian, Chinese, Italian, and Continental
dishes. Main dishes costs about Rs 125. It is the most expensive and
best place in Paharganj.
Diamond Cafe had a good selection of inexpensive food.
Lord’s Cafe, Hotel Vishal has cheap food, serving
some Israeli dishes and pizza. Also in the Hotel Vishal, the Appetite
Restaurant, has pizza and cable TV to watch while you are eating. These
three places are on the main street and are popular places to hang out.
The restaurant on the roof of the Hare Rama Guest House, is a popular,
24-hour place. It is a good place to meet people.
The rooftop restaurant on top of the Anoop Guest House serves
Thai, Continental, and Indian food. It is connected to the German Bakery
and is a good place.
The Light Restaurant is a very inexpensive vegetarian
place with good food. A thali goes for about Rs 25.
Malhotra Restaurant, 1837 Laxmi Narayan St, Chuna Mandi,
is a good, clean place with Indian, Continental, and Chinese food. To
get here you go to the end of the Main Bazaar and make a right at Rajgur
Rd, then take the first left. Open 7 am to 10 pm.
Chawla’s Relax Club, has good, cheap meals. They
serve Western breakfasts. From the Malhotra you go west about 50m, then
make a right and go to the middle of the block. It is a good, well-managed
place.
Amit, 8674 Arakashan Rd, Ram Nagar, has good pure vegetarian
Gujarati thalis from noon to 3 and 7 to 10 pm.
Where to Eat—South Delhi
The Woodlands Restaurant (618-4983/84), formerly located
in the Lodhi Hotel, has moved to Vasant Plaza, opposite Subway, Munirka,
Outer Ring Road. It is a really good place. It has excellent South Indian
food and special “Bombay Chaat.” Open from 11 am to 11 pm.
A large thali is Rs 150.
In Defense Colony is the popular Colonel’s Kababz.
Basil & Thyme, Santushti Shopping Center, Chanakyapuri,
has good Western food and good service. Main dishes are Rs 150.
In Hauz Khaus is the Village Bistro, which is a restaurant
complex with several high-class restaurants including the Great
Wall of China (good Chinese food, but expensive), Al Capone
(Italian and Continental), Golconda Terrace (food from
Andhra Pradesh), Dakshin (good South Indian), and Durbar Mohalla (Mughlai
food and a good view). Some other restaurants in Hauz Khaus: Sukhotthai,
Thai; Duke’s Place, Italian food, live jazz on
some nights; Naivedyam, with an interesting Tamil Nadu city design and
good South Indian food.
At M-Block Market in Greater Kailash there are several places. The
Brindavan Restaurant, 45 M-Block Market, Greater Kailash, is
a good South Indian restaurant.
McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Domino’s
Pizza all have branches at M-Block Market in Greater Kailash.
The veggie-burgers at McDonald’s are good. At all these places
the food and service is just like in the US and the prices are not cheap.
Karim’s, Nizamuddin area, is considered to be one of the best
restaurants in Delhi. It is famous for its rich Mughlai cuisine.
Chopsticks, Asiad Games Village, 5km south of Connaught
Place, is one of the best Chinese places in town, serving excellent
food.
Some other places at the Asiad Games Village: American Pie,
a fast food place; Aangan, a high-class restaurant serving Indian food;
and Angeethi.
Old Delhi
There are many places to eat at the west end of Chandni Chowk.
Inderpuri Restaurant is a good vegetarian place.
Karim’s, Matya Mahal, opposite the south gate of the Jami Masjid,
is considered to be one of the best restaurants in Delhi. It is famous
for its rich Mughlai cuisine.
Chor Bizaare, Hotel Broadway, Asaf Ali Rd, uses a 1927
Vintage Fiat sport car as a salad bar. It serves good Kashmiri and Tandoori
food. A meal costs about Rs 400.
Ghantewala, near Siganj Gurudwara, Chandni Chowk, has
good sweets.
ISBT Workers’ Canteen, in the Interstate bus
station, is a decent, inexpensive place.
Vig Coffee House, Chandni Chowk, across from the Red
Fort, has good veggie-burgers and snacks.
Soni Bhojnalaya, 1st Floor, Nai Sarak, just off Chandni Chowk, has good,
inexpensive thalis.
Paratha Wali Gali, off Chandni Chowk, opposite the
Central Bank, has good cheap vegetarian food. Parathas are the specialty.
There is a famous jalabhi place about one block down Chandni Chowk on
the right size, from the Red Fort side.
Restaurant in the Top Hotels
Ambassador Hotel The Chinese Room has good Chinese food.
Ashok Hotel
The Frontier Room is well-known for its Northwestern
frontier cuisine. Jewel of the East is a good Chinese place. The Durbar
has a buffet lunch and dinner for Rs 350.
Claridges
The Jade Garden is a good Chinese place. Corbetts is decorated
like a hunting camp and plays jungle sounds while you eat. Main dishes
are Rs 200. Pickwicks has an English design and serves Western food.
The Dhaba looks like a trucker roadside stand and has excellent dhaba
cooking.
Hyatt Regency
La Piazza is most likely the best Italian restaurant in Delhi, serving
excellent pizzas. The Cafe has an extensive buffet, including Indian,
Chinese, and Continental.
Imperial
This is a good place for breakfast, which is served in the garden. It
has the good Garden Party Restaurants and the Tavern Restaurant.
Le Meridien The
buffet lunches and dinners are Rs 550 and includes a good assortment
of Indian and Western food. The Golden Phoenix is an excellent Chinese
restaurant. Main dishes are about Rs 300. The Pierre is a good French
restaurant.
Park Hotel There
are buffet breakfasts for Rs 250 and the dinner buffet is Rs 450. Las
Meninas is a Spanish restaurant with main dishes for Rs 300.
Maurya Sheraton
The
Bukhara is an excellent restaurant specializing in Indian and Continental
cuisine. Dum Phukt is another good place. These two places are considered
the best restaurants in Delhi. Bali Hi is one of the best Chinese restaurants
in Delhi.
Oberoi
The Baan Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants in
Delhi. Meals run about Rs 800. La Rochelle is most likely the best French
restaurant in Delhi.
Taj Mahal Hotel The
House of Ming is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Delhi,
if not the best. Main dishes are about Rs 300. Longchamp is one of the
better French restaurants in town. Lunch is Rs 800 and dinner is Rs
1800, plus 17% tax. Casa Medici is an Italian restaurant. They serve
a buffet lunch from 1 to 3 pm. Haveli serves Mughlai food with Indian
music and dance in the background.
Taj Palace The
Orient Express is one of the best Continental restaurants
in Delhi. It has good French food. Tea House of the August Moon has
good Chinese food.
