Havelock Island
Havelock,
55km northeast of Port Blair, is a 100 sq km island that has great white-sand
beaches and clear water, which is perfect for snorkeling. There are
interesting coral formations and large fish—dolphins and turtle,
which make snorkeling very interesting. This is one of the few islands
at which foreigners are permitted to stay overnight. A bicycle
is a good way to get around. You can bring your own or rent one in village
#3 or across from the Dolphin Yatri Niwas for Rs 40 per day. You can
rent a scooter for Rs 200 per day at Narayana pan shop in village #3.
The villages are connected by hourly buses, which go to beach #7. MS VS Lodge (03192-82439, half a km from the boat jetty, has basic rooms with bath for Rs 250 and Rs 75for a dorm bed. You have to reserve a rooms in advance with A&N Tourism in Port Blair to stay at the Tent Resort or Dolphin Yatri Niwas Complex. Tent Resort, next to beach #7, has eight, good-sized tents for Rs 250 to 300 per person. You can only stay for four days. Well water is available for washing. There is a basic restaurant. To get here you take a bus to village #6 and then walk 4km to beach #7 There is
also a Tent Resort near beach #5. The Wild Orchid (03192-82472;; E) has rooms with A/C for Rs 2000/2500 and 2700/3200 during the high season. It is located on a beautiful beach. Rooms have beautiful tranditioanl Andamanese designs. Landscape gardens. Includes free breakfasts. Can be booked at Island Travels (03192-33358; fax 30109; E: islandtravels@yahoo.com) in Port Blair. Some people bring their own tents and stay on the beach. Where to Stay Radhnagar ANIDCCO Camp have tents for Rs 150 to Rs 500. Harmony Resort (03192-37656) has rooms for Rs 150. Jungle Resort (03192-37656; fax: 37657; E susheeldixit@yahoo.com) has baisc huts for Rs 400 and luxury wood-thatch cottages stariting at Rs3400. It is near No 7 Beach.
