Ahmedabad
Kalapi (550-7779), Dr Tankaria Rd, opposite the Advance Cinema, is the best restaurant in the Bhadra area. It is an A/C place and is reasonably priced (usually less than Rs 35 a preparation). It has a good selection of desserts.
Advance Restaurant, almost right next door, is cheaper.
Chetna Dining Hall, Relief Rd, near Jama Masjid, has good Gujarati thalis for Rs 30 and individual South Indian dishes. Open 10:30 am to 3 pm and 6:30 to 10 pm.
Woodlands is a first-class South Indian restaurant on the other side of the river near Navrangpura Municipal Market on CG Road.
Sankalp Restaurant, also across the river off Ashram Rd, not far from the tourist office, is a good South Indian restaurant. It has the longest dosas in India (over 1m long), costing Rs 151. They also have the highest stack of napkins at your table, about half a metre high.
Gopi Dining Hall (657-6388), Pritamarai Rd on the west side of Ellis Bridge, near VS Hospital, is a popular Gujarati thali place. Lunch, Rs 50; dinner, Rs 65. Open 10:30 am to 3 pm and 6 to 11 pm. Best to book in advance.
Mehta Garden, west of the river, has very good thalis.

Bhavnagar
Blue Hill Hotel has two very good vegetarian restaurants, one serving Gujarati thalis and the other Indian, Continental, and Chinese cuisine.
Mahavi Lodge, near the railway station, serves good thalis.
Ashok Juice Centre, Kala Nala, serves juices and ice cream.

Bhuj
Hotel Anam has a recommend vegetarian restaurant serving great all-you-can-eat thalis.
Hotel Nilam, across from the Hotel Prince, is a good vegetarian place serving Chinese and Punjabi dishes.
Green Rock, in the VRP Lodge, has good Gujarati vegetarian thalis.

Daman
Hotel Sovereign (35023; fax 34433), Seaface Rd, has a vegetarian restaurant that serves good thalis. It is the best of the less expensive places. Recommended.
Samrat, Seaface Rd, serves good-priced vegetarian Gujarati thalis for lunch and dinner.

Dwarka
Hotel Meera with an all-you-can-eat thali for Rs 25. Open 11 am to 3 pm and 6 to 11 pm.
Hotel Radhika has spicy thalis for Rs 35.
Kant Lodge (sign in Gujarati), Teen Batti Chowk, serves inexpensive thalis, some North India items, and masala dosas.

Jamnagar
Kalpana, Teen Batti, has economical vegetarian South Indian and Punjabi dishes, and ice cream. Closed Mon.
Hotel Swati is a good vegetarian place serving Punjabi and South Indian food.
Amiras, Hotel Ashiana, New Super Market, is a very good vegetarian restaurant serving Gujarati, South Indian, and North Indian food. A good value.

Junagadh
The A/C Santoor Restaurant, Mahatma Gandhi Rd, south of Chittakhana Chowk, has good Punjabi and South Indian food (main prep under Rs 30). Recommended.
Also good is the Swati Restaurant, on Jayshree Talkies Rd.
Geeda Lodge, near the railway station, has good, cheap thalis.

Palitana
Vaishali, Main Bazaar, has Gujarati thalis and South Indian food.
Siddhgiri Bhojanalaya, Taleti Rd, has Gujarati thalis.
Havmoor is a popular ice cream place.
Jagurti Restaurant is a popular snack place.

Rajkot
Babha, Panchnath Rd, has good Gujarati thalis.
Rainbow Restaurant (23354), Lakhajiraj Rd, on the ground floor of the Himalaya Guest House, is a good, cheap vegetarian place serving South Indian food and ice cream. Very popular.

Surat
Gaurav Restaurant, near the railway station, serves South Indian food.

Vadodara (Baroda)
One of the best places in town is the South Indian Woodlands Restaurant on Race Course Rd, by the circle.
Kansaar, 101 Unique Trade Centre, Sayaji Gunj, is a Gujarati vegetarian thali place, a five-minute walk to your right from the railway station.
Radhika, Tilak Rd, Sayaji Gunj, is a popular, inexpensive thali restaurant. The red sign is in Gujarati.
Canara Coffee House has good, inexpensive South Indian snacks.
