People often start taking laxative to stop constipation rather than trying to find the actual cause and then deal with this cause.

Most laxatives act by causing irritation in the bowels, which forces peristaltic action because the bowel is irritated. Laxatives should only be used with great caution. Because the system of elimination is delicate it can easily be disrupted. If it is disrupted it may take weeks or sometimes even month for it to return to normal Often laxatives are potentially harmful poisons and irritants and since the bowels try to remove it from the system it also causes feces waste to be removed with it. Laxatives do nothing to restore the evacuation system to work properly but only work to clear out the system for the moment. When the colon tries to get rid of the poisonous substance (the laxative) it also pushes out the hardened feces at the same time.

Also sometimes these poisonous laxatives are absorbed into the blood vessels and lymph system and in this way they can be distributed around the body.

The overuse of laxative can cause addiction to the laxatives, which can cause the normal function of the elimination systems to work improperly and basically shut down, because laxative are often poisonous substance which are only supposed to be used in chronic problems for a short time. Overuse of them can cause a general poisoning of the body systems.

Laxatives can tire out the bowel muscles causing them to work constantly. As the muscles cannot rest because of constant movement they can fail. The bowel muscle stimulation should only be from digestion and exercise. When the bowels are unnaturally stimulated it causes the muscle tone in the bowels to work improperly and the structure of the bowels to work improperly.

Over a half a billion dollars a year are spent on laxatives each year in the United States.
