Jyotish
or Vedic Astrology
Jyotish, or Vedic astrology is part of the vast body of knowledge known
as the Vedas and dates back to the immemorial time of the Vedic age.
According to the Vedas themselves, it is the original system of astrology
introduced to the world. The Sanskrit word Jyotish can be translated
as the “science of light” and is considered the “eye
of the Vedas”. Thus from the Vedic age up until now, people have
taken guidance from this illuminating eye to get vision and direction
in all important aspects of their lives.
Gargamuni Das
Gargamuni das was born Greg Allard on August 24,1964 in Manchester,
Connecticut. After his mother’s death at the age of 14 he seriously
started his spiritual search. In 1981 he became a practitioner of Gaudiya
Vaisnavism as taught by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the greatest
proponent of Vedic knowledge of the 20th century. After 5 years of study
in temple ashrams he was awarded brahminical status by one of Prabhupada’s
first disciples, Satsvarupa das Goswami. The initiation took place in
March of 1986 in Mayapura, India, during the auspicious 500th anniversary
appearance of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It was while in India that
Gargamuni first became inspired to seriously take to the study of Vedic
astrology.
Throughout the years he has been active in vegetarian food relief,
temple administration, as well as lecturing and writing on Vedic philosophy.
He is most well known, however, for his expertise in the science of
Vedic astrology and his special ability to intuitively apply it in a
relevant way to people’s every day lives. He has most recently
accepted the request of the Florida Vedic College to head up its department
of Jyotish.
