Lluvia™ Natural Skin Care From the Amazon Rainforest

The new Lluvia skin care products are bringing into the marketplace a new class of compounds from the Amazonian Rainforest: oils with unique properties for skin care. A type of plant called “aromatic” plant produces flowers or leaves with high concentration of specific oils have unique aromas. Such oils are referred to as “essential” or :aromatic” oils. In other plants, oil can be obtained from the seed or the nut produced by the shrub or tree. Generally speaking, seed and nut oils tend to offer us constitutive properties, helping with general maintensnce of healthy skin, while essential oils tend to contain phyto-chemicals with unique regenerative properties. Let’s brifly address a few of the oils offered by the Rainforest.

Brazil Nut Oil (Castanha Do Brazil)
Brazil nut is high in nutrients such as amino acids, zinc, vitamins A and E, and selenium, an important antioxidant. The oil of the Brazil nut is rich in essential fatty acids which are known to help lubricate and moisturize the skin. The definition of a vitamin is a dietary nutrient essential for health, whose deficiency leads to a severe disease state. Essential fatty acids were porpsosed a few decades ago to be classified as vitamins (Vitamin F) because deficiency in essential fatty acids led to life-threatening dehydration of the skin. Essential fatty acids enter in the constitution of the cellular membrane of epithelial cells in the skin, providing flexibility to the cells’ membrane. Therefore, Brazil nut oil is a precious oil to help combat problems associated with dry skin. In the jungle, Indigenous people have historically used Brazil nut oil to help heal scars and wounds. It is reported that upon their return from battle., Indigenous people would cover themselves with Brazil nut oil and lay in a hammock over hot coals. This treatment would heal arrow wounds as well as any other open wound within a few days.

The buriti palm is an elegant tree growing throughout the southern Amazon basin whose trunk can reach more than 100 feet high. It has large leaves forming a rounded crown, yellowish flowers, and an orange fruit concealing a hard, oval, edible nut. The oil extractedfrom the Buriti nut is the richest source oil in beta-carotene (higher than carrot oil). Beta-carotene and its breakdown product, vitamin A, collectively referred to as carotenoids, are tow of the most important antioxidants for the skin. Carotenoids protect the skin against the damaging effects of sunlight for neutralizing free radicals in the skin. As with many nuts, buriti is also an exceptional source of essential fatty acids that moisturize the skin.

As buriti oil, rosehip seed oil is also an excellent source of carotenoids and essential fatty acids which moisturize and protect the skin against sunlight. Rosehip seed oil, technically an aromatic oil, has unique healing properties for the skin. Rosehip seed oil has been used for ages to treat wounds and scars, and has been reported able to remove cheloid scars after a few months of topical application. Cheloid scars are scars with texture or color (red or purple), or scars that are sensitive to touch.

When extracted, the oil from the mango seed resembles more a smooth butter than an oil, indicating its high content in saturated and monosaturated fatty acids. Such fatty acids, just as those mentioned above, are known to help moisturize the skin and protect it against harsh wind and sunlight. There is a long history of use of mango seed butter by indigenous people of the Rainforest and tropical regions, for protecting the skin against long periods of exposure to sunlight and harsh wind. Mongo seed oil’s rich concentration of anti-oxidant sand carotenoids also contribute to its beneficial effects on the skin.
