The sun can destroy the skin by altering the skin’s collagen causing the cross-linking of the collagen, the connective tissues of the skin.

To block out the harmful UV effects usually a B-complex vitamin called para-aminobenzoic acid, or PABA is added to skin lotions. Also a combination of cuttle fish oil and willow bark extracts is a good light absorber of potential harmful UV rays, so vegetarian should look out for this on the ingredient list.

SPF means Sun Protection Factor. Depending on the desired SPF the amount of PABA in a product can range from 1% to 5%. Even though some products have a high SPF rating, SPF 15 is considered to be a sun-block and it will not allow the skin to get burned.

The most important thing in getting a tan is to get it gradually, adding the amount of sun one is exposed to each day. During the middle of the day the sun-burning UV rays are the highest. You have to be careful of these sun-protection products, even ones that contain a good amount of PABA, may not works properly if they contain chemicals such as mineral oil (5% or more) or alcohol (20% or more).

Sunless Tanning Lotion
The actual way that sunless tanning lotion works is that it actually dyes the skin. They don’t actually give the skin a suntan, which is why you still have to be careful of the sun and not think you are protected after developing a sun-tan just because your skin has become darker.

Sunless tanning products usually use a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). An ingredient in the DHA is acetone which is in nail polish and is know to be a toxic substance.
It can often give skin a yellow or orange tinge while the desired color of a tan is more a bronzy-gold to brown. Another potential weakness of sunless tanning lotion is that it may not just add color to the skin but also it dyes the body hairs too.
