Food Irradiation is the exposure of food to levels of radiation that is preformed on meats, fruits and vegetables. This process is preformed to purposively preserve the food.

This is a process where ionized radiation (Cobalt 60) and gamma rays pass go through food to damage the DNA of bacterial in order to help preserve foods. After the DNA of a living cell is damaged it can no longer divide. In vegetables this slows down the ripening stage, inhibits sprouting and kills living organisms such as viruses, insects, parasites, bacteria mold spores and parasites.

The process preserves food by unnaturally altering it to slow down the natural ripening process. In this way you can gets fruit during the off seasons after they have been stored for months in a warehouse.

A medium dose of irradiation of a medium dose delays ripening, reduces possible viruses and reduces the spoilage caused by microorganisms.

A high dose of irradiation kills all living organisms, viruses and sterilizes the food.

The room in which the irradiation takes places has walls at least 2 metres (6 feet) thick to keep the radiation of the Cobalt - 60 away from human. The Cobalt - 60 is kept in seal contained under water when not in use. Colbalt-60 is a by-product of the production of nuclear weapons.

The food to be irradiated is brought into the room on a conveyor belt. The amount of radiation that is absorbed is called the “absorbed dose” and it is closely kept track of to insure that enough irradiation takes place and not too much to cause an “unacceptable” change to the food. The companies who perform this process say that no residual radioactivity remains in the food after it is processed.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA(, the World Health Organization, The American Medical Association and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization have all endorsed the use of Irradiated food.

The same radioactive, nuclear waste that no one would want to have stored anywhere near them is being used to irradiate the food that we eat. Would you want to live near one of these irradiation processing plants? I am sure that your answer is no. Then it would be logical that who would want to eat this irradiated food

Many studies have shown that food irradiation is not as safe as the companies that perform them claim them to be.

The FDA concluded that Food Irradiation was save after accepting five of 413 that were performed over a 30 year periods that proved that irradiation was safe. They threw out the results of the other studies and concluded that 5 of the studies performed that concluded that food irradiation were safe were the correct ones.

Irradiation has been banned in West Germany in 1958 because the German scientists found that there were many ill effects from it. In various studies irradiated foods have caused many health problems.

It is hard to find an independent study that confirms the safety of irradiated foods. But it is a good way to get rid of nuclear waste.
