Colors
Food Coloring is used to give color to food lost during processing, to make food look more attractive, or to make food look more fresh and natural.

Various food colorings may be mixed together in the same package. Some types of processed goods can contain more than 5 different added colors in them.

Food coloring is often used in candies and desserts. Colored foods are often marketed to children. According to their body weight children can often consume much more food coloring in a given day than is recommended. Children eat much more food coloring than adults.

Studies have found that children may consume 50 to 300 mg of artificial coloring in a day in 25 or more doses, and often consume over 10 different colors in a day.

Some synthetic dyes are controversial and are banned in many countries because of safety fears. If you travel in around the world you should note that many food coloring banned for human consumption in the US and Europe can be used as food coloring in countries in Asia

There are two types of food dyes: natural and synthetic. The synthetic ones are mainly coal-tar derivatives made from chemical compounds which are made when coal is distilled. Besides being used in foods, dyes may be used in paints, cosmetics, clothes, inks, pesticides and medicines.

They are added to food and cosmetic to get them to look the way that people think they should look. They are also added to foods and cosmetic to cover up imperfection of color in them.

For instance if oranges have brown patches on their skin. Citrus Red No.2 may be sprayed on the oranges to cover up the brown patches. Food dyes may also be added to food to give them a more appealing color. Also Strawberry ice cream may have a Red Dye add to intensify the color.

The two types of coloring agents are dyes and lakes.

Dyes dissolve in water and are Found in baked goods, beverages, dairy products, dry mixes and many other products. They are made as liquids and powders.

Lakes are a form of dyes that are water insoluble. They are more stable than dyes. They are Found in oils and fats or products that do not contain enough moisture to dissolve dyes. Found in hard candies, chewing gums, cake mixes and coated pills.

The following dyes have been linked to allergic reactions, skin rashes, hyperactivity and asthma so it may be a good idea to avoid them. Some dyes have been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals:

151 Brilliant Black

Potential Harmful Effects of Coal Tar Dyes
D & C stands for colors (76 of them) that can be used in cosmetics and drug (not in foods) listed by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CFTA). D & C stands for drugs and cosmetics and they can not be used near mucous membranes. These colors are certified for use by the government.

FD & C stands for Food, Drugs & Cosmetics and these colors can be used in foods, drug and cosmetic. There are 19 FD & C colors that can used in foods.

Some artificial colors are known to be toxic and possibly carcinogens. Coal tar dyes have been judged to be safe for human because of animal testing, but various coal-tar dyes have been found to be dangerous to humans.

FD & C Red No. 40 has been banned for human use in the USA. FD & C Red No. 3 has been known to cause allergic reactions, thyroid tumors and chromosomal damage. FD & C Yellow No. 5 cased allergic reactions, chromosomal damage, lymphocytic and thyroid tumors. Aluminum lake color D & C Red No. 3, 4 or 6 are also highly suspect.

Some of the synthetic colors are suspected by the FDA to be carcinogens, but they are still in use. FD & C Red No. 40 used to be used to color maraschino cherries and lollipops to give them a bright red appearance. The Red No. 40 is classified as a monoazo color. Other monoazo color such as FD & C Red No. 4 and FD & C Yellow No 6. Various colors have links together by the class of the chemicals and it is logical to conclude that if one of the colors that uses the same class of chemicals is found to be harmful to humans that other colors with the same chemical classes will also be dangerous.

Coal tar dyes are limited in the amount of lead and arsenic that can be contained in food and cosmetic coloring. The dyes are not certified to be healthy but just that they are free of high concentrations of lead and arsenic

Coal tar dyes are used because they are cheap, easy to get and are certified, but this does not mean they are safe. Many of the synthetic colors are suspected of causing health problems and giving allergic reactions. It is a good idea to avoid synthetic dyes in food and cosmetics.

The Public Citizen Health Research Group (PCHRG) performs independent tests on animal to prove an opposite conclusion about food dyes then the test that the manufacturers have performed to prove that synthetic food dyes are safe. This definitely does not mean that the animal tests that PCHRG performed are at all even slightly ethical, but it does further prove the potential problems with animal testing being at all being valid proof of anything

Natural Coloring
Natural coloring and inorganic food and cosmetic dyes are not certified as they are not coal-tar products. This does not mean they are safe, but that the consumers themselves have to decide if they are safe.

Some natural red colors are derived from cherry and beet juices. Annatto is a red waxy substance that is around the seed of a shrub found in Central America called Bixa orellan, which is used to make natural red dyes.

Saffron can be used to make a yellow color.

Indigo is one of the best known natural colorings. It is derived from the indigo plant that has a blue type color. It has been used for centuries.
